THREE MILE BAY - Three Weedsport children died after being trapped in the wreckage of a car after their mother crashed into a utility pole as she was being chased by police late Friday, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.
The dead children were Mary Porvo, 2; Nathaniel Parker, 6; and Tyler Parker, 10. Tyler and Nathanial were enrolled in the Weedsport Central School District.
Lisa Parker, 29, of Weedsport, was pulled over for erratic driving near the village of Chaumont at about 11:30 p.m. and bolted just as a deputy was about to begin questioning her, Sgt. Joseph Cullen said Saturday.
The deputy followed and tried to stop her again, but Parker
continued speeding west toward Lake Ontario until the 1994 Honda Accord smashed into the pole.
The car broke in half, with the rear part continuing another 50 feet past the shattered pole, Cullen said.
The children - one each in a car seat, booster seat and seatbelt - were trapped in the car, part of which caught fire, he said. Parker survived with multiple internal injuries and was in critical condition Saturday at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.
“Nathaniel and Tyler were well thought of students at Weedsport Elementary School,” said Shaun O'Connor, the superintendent of the Weedsport Central School District, Saturday. “According to their teachers, Nathaniel was a good-natured and sociable boy and Tyler was a kind and intelligent child. Their deaths, along with their sister, are tragic and the Weedsport community as a whole will grieve. Our thoughts and prayers are in support of their surviving family members in this time of loss.”
The school district will have a counselor at the elementary school Monday for residents in need of grief support. The school district is asking anyone seeking grief support to contact the elementary school at 834-6685 or visit the school.
Parker was driving to a summer camp, police said.
Cullen said Parker was driving at a high rate of speed when she crashed, but investigators were still working on how fast and why she decided to take off during the traffic stop.
There is no confirmation alcohol was involved, but “that's something we're looking at,” he said.
Three Mile Bay is 72 miles north of Syracuse on Lake Ontario.
