Two Cents

Friday, June 22, 2007 9:21 AM EDT

I would like to thank The Citizen for giving Murray Lynch a well-deserved break.
I'm not surprised they had a small turnout for the tire roundup this year. For whatever reason, they seem to keep it secret.

Mayoral candidate Mike Quill squandered $650,000 on a bungled contract when he was chief of the fire department. I can't imagine how much money he could cost the city as mayor.

When serial letter-writer Lisa Backus attacks our beloved Two-Cent column (our is the proper pronoun as I am a huge fan and frequent contributor), Lisa is then, to quote Merle Haggard, “Walking on the Fighting Side of Me.”

Isn't it interesting that it only takes three people to make you a multi-millionaire like Roy Brown - Mr. Vargason, Mr. Carbonaro and Mr. Corning. Isn't America a wonderful place?

" Violet, this is what is known as debate. This used to be considered indespensable in any democratic society interested in a healthy, just society. Of course, the truth counts at least as much. "

" Bobbo, I'm not against capitalism per se. I am against capitalism run amok. And I am against corporations having the same rights as people, being allowed to exist in perpetuity without proving their worth, not paying their fair share of taxes, being able to amass unlimited wealth and power, and being socially irresponsible and corrupt. I think most people who truly understand the issues of the day would agree with me on these points - most all of our economic and political problems are a result of these realities. What you say, eh? "

" The Popular Mechanics' "debunking" of the demolition theory is a total joke and a fraud. FWIW, I studied structural engineering myself, and to me the pancake theory seems utterly preposterous. Especially taking into account the innumerable witnesses who heard explosions, leads me to believe the commission's work was nothing but a pure con job and a coverup. Buildings just do not collapse so symetrically like that unless it is a CD. Why is Osama Bin Forgotten not on the FBI's MW list in conjunction with the attack? Why wasn't a commission convened immediately? Why was the tape recording of the ATC destroyed? Sorry, there are just too many problems with the official conspiracy theory for me to believe any of it, and there is too much compelling evidence to indicate that it was very possibly an inside job. As for Dems vs Republicans, there are good and bad on both sides of the isle. There are some good progressive Democrats fighting on our behalf, but the rest of them and the overwhelming majority of Republicans are simply crooks interested in power and lining their pockets, and the corporate and military interests are more than happy to oblige. The Dems vs Republican frame needs to be changed to Rich and Powerful vs the Poor, cause that is what the debate should really be about. The old labels merely serve to obfuscate the real issues. "

" The Tire Roundup is a great idea but unfortunately this year it was not promoted enough. That could be why there was a small turnout. I had only seen a mention of it in a small clip of Kelly's Corner in the Port Byron Shopping Guide. I myself had made other plans for that weekend. I still have tires to get rid of. "

" I think the same three people Violet just need to get a room honestly although by reading their attacks and comments I wonder how long they could stand being in the same room. There are forums available on other sites for politics and discussions of that nature. I enjoy reading it all the first time as you can kind of depict individuals by their comments and learn a few things on opinions but the same over and over again really just requires a room or other forum. "

" I dont know about anyone else...but I'm tired of seeing the same people making the same comments over and over again. We get the fact that you have your political differences, but each side just states their case over and over, and other than a few regulars, no one really cares. Neither side will change the others' minds, so why not talk about something else? "

" True, the republicab controlled congress took pork barrel spending to new heights, the demovrats have proved no better. The dems promised to reform such abusive practices of our money. Their idea of reform? adding the earmarks behind closed doors after the bill has passed the house and senate so that no one can see until its too late. Fortunately the minority republicans were able to block this change so that earmarks must in the bill before approval, but they're still earmarks and we've clearly lost control of our government. Sad to know that we pay taxes just so our congressmen can bribe their constituents. "

" AJ, I don't read as much as I may have led on (no time), but I did look into those books, read their synopses and reviews. It seems to me that good and evil will always come hand in hand. For the great benefits and wealth we receive from captialism also comes corruption. But on the other hand, while in theory socialism and communism may give (to quote Marx) "each according to his ability, to each according to his need", in practice leaves the populace in poverty. The World Bank is not as bad as you think. It has done many great things too. Read Wikipedia's entry on the World Bank. "

" Generaly speaking, republicans are conservative, demcrats are liberal, and socialists are progressive. I guess its no secret then how the democrat party intends reshape our government now that they are trading in their "liberal" label for the "progressive" one. "
