My name is Dewey, and I am a cat who lives in the Seymour Library. I was named after Melvil Dewey, who created a library classification system. In the morning before the library opens and on weekends when the library is closed, I'm allowed to roam around the building.

I've learned a lot about the Dewey Decimal System by hanging out in the nonfiction stacks.

I lounge around in the 590s, but nothing small and gray ever runs my way.

I guess my overweight sister, Paige, keeps catching and eating my dinners.

One morning, Paige and I figured out how to use a computer.

Turning it on was a little difficult with our paws, but batting around that mouse seemed so natural! I didn't realize that the library has access to the Internet and full-text newspapers and magazines.

I learned that there are library cats all over the world. We visited http://ironfrog.com/catsmap.html and found a map showing where other library cats live.

In fact, Dewey Readmore Books, a cat who died at age 19 in Iowa, was a mascot at the Spencer Public Library.

The library director, Vicki Myron, signed a $1.25-million book deal for Dewey's life story.

Now, that is a deal that I wish I could have sunk my claws into. If I were to write an autobiography, I'd have lots to say about life here at Seymour.

The food is fabulous, the scenery is splendid and the reading is something to rave about.

Paige and I might take a road trip to meet other library cats.

I want to visit the Kahului Public Library in Hawaii to greet another cat named Dewey. The problem is that I can't stay afloat, although I've been reading the new library books about swimming.

Paige wants to visit the Round Lake Area Public Library District in Illinois to meet another cat named Paige.

Meanwhile, as we plan our trip, we'll continue to learn about the world through books, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks and DVDs at the library.

We are past the age limit to join the summer reading program, but children can join beginning July 10.

I hear the footsteps of humans, so I need to type faster and shut down this computer.
