AUBURN - The city school board extended the contract for Assistant Superintendent Joseph D. “J.D.” Pabis and agreed to terms for his upcoming appointment as interim district chief Tuesday.
The Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education voted 7-1 in favor of the contract extension following an executive session. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Board member Joseph Leogrande cast the only no vote.
Pabis, the current assistant superintendent of personnel, finance and operations for the district, will serve as interim superintendent following the departure of John Plume, who retires July 27. In a separate resolution, the board unanimously agreed Pabis will receive a stipend of $250 per workday in addition to his annual salary.
The appointment expires at the end of the year or when a permanent superintendent is selected. A search is under way.
In other news:
€ Plume reassured the board and public a small outbreak of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is under control. This month, the county Health Department confirmed three cases involving Auburn High School students.
“I can see a certain amount of assumptions of conditions that simply are not true,” he said.
The school has taken a number of precautions, including isolating the students, sanitizing the school and notifying parents and physicians. The upper respiratory infection is not contagious enough to be spread through normal day-to-day activity, he said.
€ Board members David Lansford and Charles Cator announced their intentions to seek the board presidency and vice presidency, respectively.
“I don't think this gesture is about me, it's about us as a board,” Lansford said. “I will expect of you to step up and I will ask you to do so.”
Cator said that in stepping aside from a bid to represent Auburn on the Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative Educational Services earlier this year, he resolved to take a more active role on the board.
Current President Michael Stearns cannot fill another one-year term because consecutive terms are limited to three by a board policy adopted last year. Ginny Kent, vice president since 2005, has also decided not to reseek her seat.
The board's reorganizational meeting is slated for July 3.
