One of the largest used book sales in the region takes place right in our own backyard; the 16th annual Book Bonanza to benefit St. Joseph School will be held in the center court area of the Fingerlakes Mall on Saturday and Sunday, July 14 and 15.
Last year was the biggest Book Bonanza ever, bringing 5,500 people to the event. More than 100,000 used books, audiobooks, videos, CDs and DVDs were donated by community members for the sale. For a community of just 30,000, that is quite an accomplishment.
Donations of books have been pouring into the mall drop, located near the main mall entrance near Sears. The book drop is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Anyone with a large amount of books can call 224.3941 to arrange for assistance bringing them into the mall.
The Book Bonanza began 16 years ago, when then mall manager Rose Senehi was looking for an idea for a community event. She thought that a used book sale was a great idea and spoke with the Friends of the Seymour Library to gage their interest.
The Book Bonanza was a huge success immediately, bringing in thousands of books and people for the sale. The Friends of the Seymour Library continued hosting the sale for the first seven years. In 1999, St. Joseph School took over the Book Bonanza, and it continued to remain a successful community event and school fundraiser.
It takes months of preparation sorting the books into the more than 60 categories. People appreciate the organization of the sale, making it easy for shoppers to find just what they are looking for. Maps of the sale floor will be available at the cashier on the date of the sale.
On the Friday before the sale, dozens of parents, students and alumni undertake the huge task of moving 100,000 books from the book drop room to the center court area of the mall. Carts are loaded with the hundreds of boxes of books, all sorted into categories. The boxes are unloaded and stacked on tables. It is quite an operation to see.
On the Saturday of the sale, there will be hundreds of people lined up, waiting with anticipation to get at the books. A separate line forms at the “Better Books” room.
Once the sale starts, it is fun to watch the people as they all have their own method of finding the books they are looking to purchase. It is so enjoyable to see someone find that one book they were looking for.
Lots of great items have been donated to the Book Bonanza this year. Books from best selling authors like Mary Higgins Clark, James Patterson, Danielle Steel, Nora Roberts and more can be found in the fiction section, categorized by author.
The most popular categories include Young Children's Books, Older Children's Books, Biographies, Religion and Romance Novels. There are thousands of books in these categories, something for everyone.
Cookbooks that cover every culinary taste from Thai to Italian to Russian to South American and beyond are found in abundance in the Hobbies section. Fans of the great works of literature will find works by Ibsen, Shakespeare, Faulkner and more in Literature & Classics. Poetry & Short Stories has a wonderful selection of the works of classic and modern poets.
Paperbacks and children's books are just 50 cents each, with hardcovers costing $1. Videos, CDs and DVDs are just $2 each.
The “Better Books” section has newer books (some of which you'll find on today's bestseller list), books in excellent condition, and categories such as “Oprah's Books,” “Book Club Favorites,” “Trade Paperbacks,” “Coffee Table Books,” newer DVDs and “Trios,” which contain three books in a set, usually by the same author. “Better Books” prices run from $1 up to about $10. The “Better Books” room this year will be located next to the Deb store.
Sunday is “$2 a Bag Day” ($5 a bag for the “Better Books” room).
Bags are sold for $2 to people waiting in line, and when 10 a.m. rolls around, people head into the sale area and fill their bags with all the books they can fit.
The cashier stand will be located in the kiosk near the Corner Deli. Students from St. Joseph School will be available at the sale to assist in bringing purchases out to patrons' cars. Look for the volunteers in the white T-shirts if you need assistance.
The Book Bonanza aids the cause of the literacy in our community by providing people the opportunity to purchase books for 50 cents and $1. For the cost of one brand new hardcover book, you can buy your family an entire year's worth of reading.
Sponsors of the 16th annual Book Bonanza include Fingerlakes Mall, The Citizen, the Printery, Appleton Disposal and the Sign Guys. Special thanks to the Shoe Dept., Sears, Bath & Body Works and Aeropostale for their donations of boxes, carts and bags for the sale.
