The Lil' Yankees used power pitching and hot hitting to edge the Pirates 14-13 in an Auburn Junior Olympic 8-to-10 division game on Saturday at Casey Park. The game was just one of many on a day that served as the unofficial kickoff to the season.
Walawender also helped herself out at the plate, leading the Yankees' offensively with a 3-for-3 day.
Jenne McLaughlin drove in three runs for the Lil' Yankees and Shaelyn Freeman went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Alex Henry, Abbi Martin and Courtney Townsend also added to the offense.
For the Pirates, Anna Butera tripled and drove in two runs, Alyssa Lawrence went 2-for-3 and Amanda Dixion went 2-for-2 with a double and four RBIs. Taylor McBain pitched well but took the loss.
