Town to celebrate history

Celebrating the past and planning for the future #- goals that every history program could emulate.
Conquest has some big plans for summer activities; some that celebrate history and all that will become history.

Celebration No. 1, involves our fire department. In past columns, I have written about the humble beginnings of the Conquest Fire Department.

Starting in a cabin in the woods with 10 members, we now have a fully equipped group of men and women including ambulance, rescue and fire fighters #- far beyond the dreams of 50 years ago. That is certainly cause for celebration.

Our first planned activity is unearthing the time capsule that was buried when the fire hall was built.

That will happen at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, on the four corners in Conquest. The cylinder will be dug up, we'll have great refreshments, a celebration and perhaps a surprise or two.

We invite all throughout Cayuga County, but especially residents of our diverse community.

Call me at 776-4726 if you would like to help with this celebration or for more information.

Our first Conquest Cemetery Walk will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, in the Conquest Cemetery (pouring down rain date - July 28). We will be honoring and celebrating the lives of 10 of the people buried in the Conquest Cemetery.

This occasion will also be followed by refreshments and reminiscences (must be my Methodist heritage that all gatherings require food).

Long range plans include cemetery walks in Emerson and Spring Lake, as well.

Another activity is participation in the walking-race at the Montezuma Old Home Days. We are proud that Harry Joe Howell from Conquest won the National Walking Race in 1912.

We would like to honor his memory by defending his title and so plan to send a walking team to Montezuma on Saturday, Aug. 18

More history in the making ... mark your calendars for the Conquest Fire Department Field Days on Aug. 23, 24 and 25.

There will be lots of new activities and surprises this year.

Also of note is the continuing development of the CIViC Heritage History Center in Cato. This will be a repository much of the north (Cato, Ira, Victory and Conquest) to display, preserve and protect historical items and genealogical information.

In conclusion this month, I would like to thank the men and women of the LaBuff Cole American Legion Post in Cato. Every year, on Memorial Day, they tour the smaller northern cemeteries to honor the graves of veterans, assuring friends and families of the fallen that we will never forget their service and sacrifices.
