Blues meets all-out high-knee jumping rock ‘n' roll in the Jimmy Wolf Band. The keys make a frequent appearance in this band's music, particularly so in its original “Highly Publicized Brawl,” which sounds like a brawl between the keys and the 1950s rock ‘n' roll sound of the lead guitar reverberating deeply around them.
On the keys in that recorded track is the recognizable Mark Nanni of Los Blancos fame. The band's original, “Make Up Yer' Mind,” starts out with a sexy, steady drum beat set against a crying electric guitar. Once the vocals enter the equation, blues lovers can feel the familiar downward pull of the traditionally drawn-out, rhythmic blues love-lost song.
Wolf is currently working on a new album, which may include this track.
About the new album, Wolf said, “(With) this new one I'm going to try to get some things happening with it. It's going to be, I don't know how it's going to be different, I hope I have better songs and better sound and a little more (style). On Jimmy Wolf, I had different styles - I had rock, a couple three blues, some alternative. I'm going to stick to the blues, rock thing with soul in it instead of going all over the place.”
Wolf's discography includes five previous records, including his freshman collection from 1999, “Raw Blues,” which he classified as one of his proudest musical accomplishments. Wolf was also a featured performer in Washington, D.C., for the opening of the Smithsonian's new National Museum of the American Indian in 2004.
Wolf's influences include the Chicago and Delta blues styles. He has been nominated twice as “best blues artist” at the Native American Music Awards from 1999-2000.
Wolf is a self-proclaimed fan of such blues and R&B artists as Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Koko Taylor, Albert King, Millie Jackson and Little Johnny Taylor and has shared the stage with all of the above.
Wolf's band in its current formation is brand new, with Utica bassist Jonny Smith (of rockabilly band Whoopin' Cough Jonny) who plays acoustically with Wolf as well. Also on board in the Wolf three-piece is Carl Carey of Syracuse on drums, who has recorded several albums with Syracuse blues musician Roosevelt Dean.
