Readers' response critical to success

One of the benefits of having our online Citizens' Say feature, as well as the Two Cents phone line and e-mail address, is that we receive a lot of feedback from our readers. Ideas for this column, quite frankly, often come from those comments and questions. This week, I'll address a couple of recent observations submitted by our readers:
Reader comment from Two Cents published June 6:

“The Citizen has finally convinced me that you are an ultra-conservative newspaper since you keep publishing the dribble that Mike Reagan issues every week. His comments aren't even worth two cents.”

I'm sure there are some conservative readers who might laugh at this person's label of our newspaper as ultra-conservative, just as I'm sure there are liberal readers who scoff when readers accuse The Citizen of being a left-wing propaganda machine.

The truth is we make an effort to present a range of views with our opinion columnists, both locally and nationally.

On Saturdays, we've started publishing syndicated columnists for our readers who would like some opinion-based content on national and international issues.

This particular comment is inaccurate in that it says we publish Reagan's column every week. For several months now, we've been running Reagan's column one week on the Saturday opinion page and a column by Amy Goodman the next week. Reagan views tend to lean conservative; Goodman writes from a more liberal perspective.

We simply don't have the space right now with our current page design to run both columns on the same day, but I've been thinking about reconfiguring the content on Saturdays to allow for it.

Reader comment from Citizens' Say posted June 6:

“They ran the same article again (on the Web site) and did not bring the comments forward.”

This particular post was in response to the piece published in the June 6 edition of The Citizen about a state report on how Auburn High School mishandled state tests. The reader thought the same article had appeared on our Web site the day before, and that we dropped online reader comments to the piece.

What actually happened was that we posted a very short story under the “Breaking News” category on our Web site on June 5. When we posted it, we only had the basic facts that came from a state report. We still were working to get more information and reaction. As we do with many breaking stories on the Web, we noted that the complete story would appear the next day.

The testing story that ran on June 6 was a different story than the one that had originally been posted online - it was much longer because it had more details and reaction.

Unfortunately, our Citizens' Say online feature allows comments on only one story at a time.
