State Senate OKs correctional bill
The state Senate approved a bill prohibiting the private operation of the state's correctional facilities.

The bill was sponsored by state Sen. Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, and chairman of the Senate's Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committee.

“Public safety should never be linked to private-sector profit motives. This legislation would prohibit the private ownership or operation of our correctional facilities and ensure that New York state continues to have full responsibility of its correctional facilities,” Nozzolio said in a news release.

The bill will be sent to the Assembly to review.

Nucor Steel reaches international mark

Nucor Steel in Auburn achieved an internationally recognized standard earlier this year by demonstrating an effective environmental management system.

The standard, ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, was established as an internationally recognized standard to show the commitment of a company's top management to good environmental practices, including conservation of materials and energy, attaining necessary permits and maintaining good community relations, according to a news release.

“ISO 14001 certification provides evidence to customers, suppliers, employees and to nearby communities of the commitment by Nucor Steel Auburn Inc., to meeting their environmental responsibilities,” said A. Joseph Falcsik, vice president of certification for SRI Quality System Registrar, which registered Nucor Steel for being involved in the standard.

Nucor manufactures and supplies rebar, merchant bar quality and special bar quality steel products.
