We are busy getting ready for all the summer happenings at Hazard Library in Poplar Ridge.
Tuesday was the official start of our summer programs. This was the Story Hour Picnic and Graduation. It was an opportunity for moms, dads and children to sit under the tree on a blanket and enjoy a picnic lunch. After lunch there was time for group games. It was a special day for our “graduates.” We wished them well as they leave the story hour for bigger and better things.

Tuesday, June 26, is the official kickoff of the 2007 summer reading program: “Get a Clue @ Your Library.” The day starts with a special program, “Clues to Dinosaurs,” presented by the Museum of the Earth. Have you ever touched a real dinosaur bone? You can if you join us. This program will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Friends Meeting House on Poplar Ridge Road in Poplar Ridge. A special thanks to Cayuga Lake National Bank for sponsoring this program.

After the program, the children have a chance to sign up for the summer reading program. Each child selects the number of books he/she will read or will have parents, grandparents or siblings read to them. Once the goal is met, there is a special prize - a free book at the annual Hazard Library book sale.

The “clues” are at the library just waiting for the children.

Our children's performing arts program is a series of four Thursday morning programs, which begins July 12.

All the programs start at 10:30 a.m. and are held at the Friends Meeting House. The schedule is:

€ July 12 - “The Roots of American Music for all Ages!” Musicians John Rossbach and Andrew Van Norstrand will entertain visitors with a combination of traditional American folk, old-time country and bluegrass music.

€ July 19 - “Adventure, Knowledge and Folly.” Storyteller Kenneth “Tiny” Glover will tell tales from all over the world.

€ July 26 - “Tumbao: The World of Afro-Cuban Percussion.” Musician Anthony Padilla will introduce visitors to Latin percussion and a wide-array of instruments.

€ Aug. 2 - “Bugs, Slugs and Beaver Chews ... Wild Thing Tunes, Wild Thing Clues.” Performer Tom Sieling presents a very participatory family program featuring humorous songs about our natural world.

These programs are made possible by a state grant, community sponsors and friends of the library.

The summer programs provide an opportunity for “children of all ages” to enjoy a live performance just a few miles from home.

All are welcome to attend these free events, and the library is open after every program.

While in Poplar Ridge, visitors may borrow a book, a video or DVD, or use the high speed Internet.

From Aug. 11 to 18 is the Hazard Library book sale held at the Poplar Ridge Fire Hall on Route 34B in Poplar Ridge.

The book sale is open during library hours, which are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
