I disagree with Gary Finch's recent column suggesting that same-sex marriage “dilutes tradition.” I believe same-sex marriage would strengthen tradition by welcoming more couples to embrace the married life and all of the responsibilities that it entails. It would also give the benefits of a fully recognized partnership to couples who, to this point, haven't had them.
Further, all of the benefits that marriage as an institution gives to society would be enhanced by extending tradition to include those who should have always been included in the first place.
I would like to thank Mr. Finch, however, for continuing to explore this issue, and entering into an open debate that I hope will lead our state and our nation to finally recognize all loving couples who want to be married.
