Parents should not subject children to foul language

Tuesday, June 12, 2007 9:53 AM EDT

When the warmer weather arrives, people's windows are open more often, and it is surprising how frequently one will hear parents in Auburn using incredibly foul language when they speak to their children.
It is unfortunate because the foul words serve no real purpose - the tone of voice is more important in correcting a child's behavior. Worst of all, this kind of “correction” trains a child at a very young age to lack self-control, “swear like a sailor” and verbally abuse others. There is absolutely no area of life in which your child will benefit or succeed because he/she has been taught to swear habitually. In fact, your child will be marked socially as “a kid who comes from a bad family.”

When I am walking around Auburn, I hear quite a few parents swearing at their children.

Yes, many adults let out a swear now and then when they are angry - most adults can deal with that - but it is not fair to our children to subject them to an environment of habitual foul language.

Some people who swear in front of children constantly identify themselves as “Christians.” If they put no effort into cleaning up habitual bad language in their own homes, is this because they think what they are doing is OK with God, or do they just view Jesus as a doormat they can wipe their sins on?

" Aaaaaand... a sanctimonious parting shot at Christians, because it's the "in" thing to do. Pathetic. "

" Parents that need to read this aren't. I just wish we as educators would not have to monitor foul language, sexual harrassment, and blatant disrespect. It is a fact of life that we do now because parents do not know how to be parents. "

" I hear it constantly, one part of the problem is that in todays youth society, it is seen as a power struggle. Recently graduating from Auburn High, its more of a social war zone than anything, with everyone attempting to outdue one another in "who lives on the edge". Swearing to them promotes power, and authority over their peers. It really only promotes ignorance. "

" Where do you come up with this observation???? "Some people who swear in front of children constantly identify themselves as “Christians.” " I don't think you know what you are talking about. "

" I too am aghast when I hear this type of language, in everyday conversations. When every other word coming out of someone's mouth is offensive, it's a big turn off. To me, it shows irresponsibility, poor judgement, lack of manners and a lack of education (for use of better words). I admit, I've been known to drop a few here and there, but I was always taught that there's a time and a place for everything. If my teen-agers or their friends use this type of language at my home and I hear it, they get one warning. More than that, they're shown the door. It's really worked here! "

" I also live up by the high school and if parents don't think that their kids won't mirror their behavior, come up this way on Lake Ave and listen to how these kids use the english language themselves. Not all hear that kind of language in their homes but unreal what we do hear out of the mouthes of babes with these kids walking home from school some days. "
