JERUSALEM, N.Y. - A 10-year-old boy drowned in a pond during a multifamily gathering in the Finger Lakes region.
Laurence S. Hoover of Penn Yan drowned Saturday afternoon after jumping into the water during a gathering of Mennonite families at a farm.
The boy was not a good swimmer and had jumped in with the intent of grabbing a rope and being pulled across the water by others, said Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike.
“He just missed the rope,” Spike said Sunday
A 15-year-old relative dove into the pond and brought Laurence out of the water. Efforts were made at the scene to resuscitate the boy.
Jerusalem is about 45 miles southeast of Rochester.
