Minutes before jury selection in his trial, a Cato man pleaded guilty to first-degree rape and second-degree assault in connection with an attack on an 18-year-old woman in Sterling last summer, Cayuga County District Attorney James Vargason announced Monday.
Sentencing for Harold Calkins, 22, White Cemetery Road, will take place Aug. 7. Vargason said he intends to ask for at least 16 years in prison for Calkins.
Calkins was arrested on accusations of threatening to kill an 18-year-old woman July 1, cutting her with a knife and forcing her to perform different sexual acts with him in a wooded area in Sterling.
