The village of Moravia has only one candidate for mayor, but a three-way race for two trustee seats in June 19 elections.
Longtime Mayor Don Myers will not run for a seventh two-year term. Gary Mulvaney, a trustee since 2000, is running unopposed for Myers' seat with both Republican and Democratic party endorsements.
“We've got some things that are still unfinished,” said Mulvaney, 59, a longtime president of Moravia Little League baseball and fire department treasurer.
Finalizing the creation of a water district in the Montville section of town, finding a buyer for the old village fire station on Main Street, and creating a satellite office for the Cayuga County Sheriff's Department in the village Justice Center top the list of priorities.
On the other side of the table, incumbent Gary Fickeisen will run for his seventh term as trustee.
“The current board has been working pretty good together and I enjoy doing it,” said Fickeisen, a 12-year trustee and current deputy mayor.
The 63-year-old Republican owns Chronicle Guidance Publishing in Moravia.
“I am glad that it isn't an uncontested election; it's always nice to have other people running,” Fickeisen said.
Fellow Republican incumbent Chris Leonard, 37, is running for a second term on the board. The C & M Transportation owner said he's looking forward to working with the board for another two years.
“I enjoy it. I think we have a good board,” Leonard said. “I hope we keep all the same people we've got now.”
Democrat Kevin Davis, 52, represents the only non-incumbent in either race. His professional perspective as a contractor could help make village services more efficient, he said.
“I thought I could bring my expertise to the table and try to lower taxes,” said Davis, who also owns a snowmobile business.
Mulvaney said he's looking forward to a smooth transition for the board. Myers has served 12 consecutive years as mayor in addition to two separate stints in the 1960s and '70s.
“Whoever it is that gets in, I hope they have some positive ideas,” Mulvaney said. “This is a good little community and we'd like to keep it that way.”
