Vegans, vegetarians help preserve culture, livestock

Wednesday, June 6, 2007 10:04 AM EDT

Thank you for Judy Vorreuter's thoughtful piece, “Many reasons to go vegetarian” (June 2).
Indeed, as young children, we often don't make the connection between the lump of protein on our plate and the life of a once-breathing animal. Adding to this, the meat industry goes out of its way to conceal the realities of modern animal agriculture.

Kids are given coloring books of Old MacDonald's Farm, not of egg-laying hens having parts of their beaks seared off with a hot metal blade, nor of pregnant sows so confined in their restrictive crates that they can't even turn around.

Fortunately, we don't have to mislead our children and ourselves over this matter.

Delicious and hearty vegetarian foods now dot mainstream supermarket aisles in abundance.

Eating vegetarian no longer means giving up our favorite tastes; it simply means opting for the cruelty-free versions of our favorite tastes.

Whether we decide to go vegetarian, vegan, or simply choose more vegetarian meals, we can all help minimize the amount of suffering in the world each time we eat with compassion.

" Hi all, First off, it's tofu, not tufo. Secondly, there's nothing hypocritical about eating mock meat. This revolves around reducing animal suffering, not about the taste of meat. In the 21st century, we can choose alternatives that don't cause needless suffering to animals. And yes, not all animals are raised in factory farms, but the vast majority are. And all meet a brutal, merciless death at the slaughterhouse. "

" I never understood the point of "vegetarians" buying processed foods that are designed to taste like meat products. If you crave the taste of meat your body is trying to tell you something. Besides, these fake meats are processed foods and NO processed foods are good for you, I don't care what the box says! Also, not all animals that provide meat and dairy are mistreated or raised in a way that is harmful to the earth. Know thy farmer and buy local meat and produce! "

" I'm going out to fire up the grill. Toss on a couple steaks for dinner! So much better that tufo "
