AUBURN - Cayuga Community College's Board of Trustees may soon hear a new voice representing the Cayuga County Legislature's interests.
Cayuga County's Government Operations Committee voted 3-2 Tuesday night to appoint Linda Murphy, R-Auburn, to replace Legislator David Pappert, R-Auburn, on the board.
Government Operations Chairman Francis Mitchell noted during the meeting that Pappert is seeking to serve another full term on the board even though he is ending his legislative career this year.
Several committee members said they wanted a sitting legislator to serve the board's seven-year term.
“It's important that a sitting legislator be a representative on the college's board,” said Legislator Paul Dudley, R-Cato. He then nominated Murphy, a CCC alumni, to take the seat.
Committee members didn't know during the meeting whether Murphy would consider taking the appointment, but Murphy later said she was extremely interested in becoming a board member.
“I'm very interested. It's one of the greatest assets we have here,” Murphy said.
The potential trustee also said she wanted to speak to other legislators to learn about time commitment and the responsibilities of the position.
County attorney Fred Westphal said the county appoints five of the 10 board seats for each seven-year term. One of the seats is usually held by a sitting legislator.
Legislator Dan Schuster, D-Auburn, and Mitchell voted against Murphy's appointment. Schuster noted that he couldn't support the appointment of another Republican board member to an all Republican board.
In other news:
€ Members of the public may express their opinion of proposed term limits for county legislators at a public hearing scheduled for June 26 during the Legislature's monthly meeting.
The proposed local law states that no person shall be elected to more than three legislative terms on the Legislature.
The current law, which has created several problems, including allowing legislators to reset their terms, states that no legislator can serve more than 12 consecutive years.
