Each Wednesday, The Citizen features someone in the food services industry from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks:
This week, we spotlight Anthony Calcagno, owner of Pellegrino's Italian Deli.
Q. What is the one food you cannot live without? Why?
A. Pizza, I just like it.
Q. Fill in the blank. People would be surprised to know that even though I work in the food industry, when I am at home in the kitchen, I __________.
A. Honestly I'm never home. So I'm always here cooking for everyone else.
Q. What do you like most about living and working in the Finger Lakes region?
A. I was born and raised here; I like the people, and I like the community.
Q. If you were given $1 million to open your own restaurant, describe it and what type of food you would serve.
A. I'd open a large barbecue rib and chicken place, because we really don't have one around here.
Q. Where would it be located? Why?
A. Here. Because, like I said, I was born and raised here, and I love the people and community.
Q. On the day of your restaurant's grand opening, if you could select anyone in the world to be your first three guests, who would they be?
A. My mother, father and fiancee; pretty much my family.
Q. Describe your most embarrassing moment while working on the job.
A. At another restaurant I owned, I was horsing around with one of my employees and I slipped, fell down and ripped my pants wide open.
Q. What is your favorite junk food?
A. I love white cheddar popcorn.
Q. What have you learned are the top three ways to run a successful food business?
A. You should have a good personality, a clean restaurant and good food.
Q. If you weren't working in the food business what would you like to be doing?
A. I really don't know because I've been doing food my whole life.
Q. Ugh. What's the one food which you absolutely can't stomach? Why?
A. Anchovies, because they're hairy and they smell.
