Head of the class

Most student athletes lead busy lives trying to juggle athletics, their homework and any other teenage activities in which they may be involved.

Jordan-Elbridge senior Cate White runs cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field, and will graduate at the top of her class later this month.
Cate White has handled it all with a runner's grace.

The Jordan-Elbridge senior is not only an accomplished runner for the Eagles cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams, but she is also president of the National Honor Society, vice-president of the varsity club and an avid horse-back rider - just to name a few extra-curricular activities.

Oh yeah - she will graduate at the top of her class later this month, too.

“It's a lot of prioritizing your time,” White said. “I go to school, go for a short run, eat and get my work done.

“I think a lot of athletes learn really quickly that they have to make a list of what's most important and what comes first.”

White competed in the Section III state qualifier last Thursday, finishing third in the Division II 1500 meters (5:13.60).

“I just want to get a personal best,” the 18-year-old said.

White joined the cross country team as a freshman at the urging of her best friend, Kim Armani. She picked it up quickly and has won numerous dual and tri-meets. She came close to making the state meet this past fall.

“Oh yeah, I've come close,” she said. “Last year I think I was two spots away.”

White credits her coaches for developing her talent. “I do what they tell me to do,” White said. “Long runs have helped me a lot - they've really helped my endurance.”

Though she has been a member of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams, cross country is her favorite.

“I love running on trails,” White said. “I think our team is closer because we're all doing exactly the same thing. I enjoy of seeing a different view instead of running in a circle.”

High school may be over soon, but that doesn't mean White will have to box up her sneakers over the summer. She will join the Johns Hopkins cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field programs this fall.

The Blue Jays are an up-and-coming program and finished third in their conference and fifth in the region last fall. White, who would like to be a doctor, found the team a good fit.

“I really like the coach,” she said of Bobby Van Allen. “He was really supportive of getting me to come down there and then I fell in love with the campus and the people.”

Though she will enjoy the chance to continue her career, White knows that the books will always come first.

“I looked at colleges for my academics first because that's what I'm going to do with my life,” she said.
