Vets not too happy with my ‘Impeach Bush' signs

Tuesday, June 5, 2007 10:54 AM EDT

On Monday I went to my first ever Memorial Day Parade in Auburn. Indeed here was a place to sell some of the last 100 of the 250 yard signs which I had made up: “Impeach Bush.” I also was carrying a petition directed to Congressman Michael Arcuri, asking him to initiate this impeachment process in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The most blatant reasons to justify the impeachment of Bush:

1. Breaking FISA law (written after Nixon's little tricks) to prevent secretive wiretaps without a court warrant; this FISA law reinforces the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Bush, when this secret lawbreaking was revealed, blatantly said he was going to do it evermore: Screw the Constitution.

2. Lying to and deceiving the U.S. Congress and U.S. citizens in order to justify an illegal war.

3. Criminal disregard for lives of citizens of a U.S. city, before, during and after a major storm, Hurricane Katrina.

The sad part of this parade was my encounters with some of the veterans who were supportive of a lying, warmongering president; some of these chaps were World War II veterans who apparently don't know the difference between a legally justified war based on threats to our country, and an illegal war based on lies, clever deception and propaganda supported by the mainstream media.

Maybe if they had fought in the Vietnam War, they would evoke wisdom, following reasoned reflection.

Some of the people who signed my petition, with the most passion, were those who had been in the military. As one VFW elder said to me: “He's not my Commander in Chief; I wouldn't go anywhere he commanded.”

" OK, I could be like the others and go on and on about my opinions, but there is no point. We shall never agree when it comes to two opposing viewpoints. I do feel however that both sides have the right to their opinion. The person with the signs has the right to make, carry, and sell those signs. And the War Vets have the right to be offended by them if they find it offensive. This is America, let the free be free and do as they choose. "

" Chris, BTW, do you realize your hypocrisy of accusing MOI of sticking my fingers in my ears and screaming "la la la"?!?!? I mean , Chris---YOU'RE A BUSH SUPPORTER!!!!! "

" Hmmmm...the National Institute of Standards and Technology--an institute dependent upon government grants for its very existence and salaries? Gee, Chris, if the Bush Organization could get NASA scientists to fudge and change their reports on satellite and global warming data, what do you think they could do to this agency? BTW, I've read their report and they confronted only the most obvious easily contestible questions. "

Chris Van Note wrote on Jun 6, 2007 9:59 AM:

" Yes Karl, we all know about your "facts": The movies Farenhype 9/11 and Loose Change. You believe Michael Moore and I'll stick with the National Institue of Standards and Technology. The organization with real structural and thermal engineers. I'm kinda funny that way. I know my history and we are about as far from fascism as a country can be. If GWB starts operating concentration camps and has the brown shirts rounding people up, please let me know. It must be interesting to live in liberal conspiricy theory land where one can stick his fingers in his ears and to la-la-la at the top of his lungs when actual facts are presented. Intellectual and moral cowardice is the only consistency to the inconsistency of liberalism. "

" Why do people continue to not understand that just because you oppose the current Government it doesn't mean that you are against any troops. My husband is a soldier and he feels more strongly against the war than anyone. Most of today's soldiers do. WW1 and WW2 vet's had a reason to fight, today it's different. You are all staring into your television sets and accepting all this propaganda as truth. Open your minds for once, you might be surprised. "

Karl L wrote on Jun 6, 2007 12:48 AM:

" Whatever, Chris; I have facts for days concerning 9-11 but am not gonna sit here and monopolize this forum with a 4,000 word document--do some open-minded research and you'll learn the truth. Secondly, I just said I believe Islamic fundamentalism is a problem--but certainly not to the extent that this administration wants us to believe! Sorry to see that you've fallen for it! But then again, I suppose if I read Ann Coulter (snicker, snicker!), I might have too! And comparisons to Hitler being "beyond the pale"?!?!--and you accuse ME of not recognizing/using facts?! I chuckle at your impudence! Lastly--yes, I'm emotional--it's the unfortunate by-product of living in a world with willfully ignorant, blinded-by-idology-loyalty people like you! "

" Karl, you just proved the point why a liberal should never run this country and most certainly should NEVER be in charge of homeland security. I would like to say I find it hard to believe that you don't think that there are some very, very bad people out there trying to do us harm, but I don't. Your rhetoric is filled with emotion, but lacks facts which is what the "9-11 Truthers" use. Before it was "connect the dots", Bush didn't do enough to stop 9-11, these murderers got by our defenses and killed 3000 Americans on our own soil. Now that homeland security is "connecting the dots" and trying to stop these fanatics before they succeed, you think its all made up. Pathetic really. The comparison of Hitler's Germany to the US now is beyond the pale. Maybe you should brush up on your history. GWB will be out of office in Jan. 2009, and hopefully be followed by another GOPer. But he will be out of office because we live in a Democracy, not a dictatorship as you so breathlessly whine about. "

" MY GOD, Dan! I LOVE this country--and that's EXACTLY WHY I hate Bush and the Neocon/criminal enterprise currently RUINing this country. I have been all over the world, and theres no country like the good ol' USA! Sad to see that, as is typical with Conservatives, you'd rather just "get rid of" someone whose view doesn't jibe with yours, but I've come to expect that, and I've become immune to it, thank you. I'm sorry to hear that you've bought into the "Terror" thing too; what a sad way to exist. I for one, refuse to be deceived any longer. I agree that Islamic fundamentalism is a world problem, but so is this Criminal Administration's unchecked Imperialism, deceit, and ruthless Unilaterallism. There is no greater threat to our country today than from our own government, and I mean the wimpy sellout Democrats as well as the Republicans and Neocons. It aint a "liberal vConservatives" thang as much as an "American people vs Bush/Cheney" thang! I think I'll hang around a bit in this great country if you don't mind.... "

" David, Karl and others if they hate this country so much. Should pack up and leave the country. If it was 10 yrs ago. I would invite you to live under Saddam's rule for a few years. You might have a different view of the despot. The past few weeks still proves there is still danger from the crack pots. It took them 9 yrs to drop the world trade center. If it takes them another 9 yrs to blow up a nuke in major city. They will wait for the time. Our freedoms are at risk. "

" Chris, I'm sorry to hear that you apparently wear speedo's--leather too; ugh the shrinkage! Anyhoo--I'd like to forget that you quote Ann Coulter on occasion, and attempt to take you seriously, but you are so willing to extend to Bush a supreme amount of latitude and apologia as if the guy was some model of integrity and trustworthiness, that I have to run to the bathroom and hurl whenever you post. I mean are you, too, just gullible, or truly that BAD a judge of character?! This administration has been a virtual font of lies; of untruths and half-truths, and what they can't outright deceive the public on, they will spin, delay and obfuscate the truth until, inevitably they have to "admit" "mistakes". I feel kinda sorry for you that you truly believe in the whole "fear and terrror" thing that they push. about "terror plots" and the like. I have a suggestion for you, SERIOUSLY, CHRIS...read some history of Hitler and the Nazi Party's rise to power, and how they both manufactured "incidents" and "terror attacks" (the staged Reichstag attack) and used fear to control the population---THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION HAS FOLLOWED THEIR METHODS LIKE A VIRTUAL BLUEPRINT!!!! "

" Thats right Karl, there is no terrorism out there. Its all in the GOPs imagination, the first WTC bombings in the early 90s never happened as it was Clinton colluding with Bush so he could bomb and asprin factory, 9-11 was actually done in CGI as a plot by Halliburton to obtain world domination. All those folks supposedly killed are actually living on a space station orbiting Mars as we speak! There is no terrorism, the world is all puppy dogs, group hugs and leather speedos. "

" I really get a kick out of the liberal arguing "points". Lets take a factual look at the emotional tripe the left loves to use. Wiretaps: 2002 "In Re: Sealed Case," the FISA appeals court decision cited a previous FISA case [U.S. v. Truong], where a federal court "held that the President did have inherent authority to conduct warrantless searches to obtain foreign intelligence information." The court's decision went on to say: "We take for granted that the President does have that authority and, assuming that is so, FISA could not encroach on the President's constitutional power." Lying to go to War: the intel was faulty, Bush himself said "It is true that much of the intelligence turned out to be wrong," he said. Still, he said the decision to remove former Iraq leader Saddam Hussein was the right one. "We are in Iraq today because our goal has always been more than the removal of brutal dictator," Being wrong doesn't make a person a liar. Funny how Bush's name is the only one that comes up, not any of the Democrats who voted for the war in HJ Res 114 or all the statements that the Dems made from the 90s on thru in support of taking down Hussein. Conveniently forgot those little tidbits of information I see. Katrina: Once again, all Bush's fault. No culpability of Mayor Nagin (D) and the 100s of buses left unused, Gov. Blanco (D) who didn't ask for federal help in a timely manner. How about the people that were told to leave and didn't because the welfare state has left them unable to rely on themselves. It must have been the Bush weather machine that churned up the 3rd most powerful hurracaine ever recorded to hit landfall in the US, Bush must have dug a "tub" to build New Orleans below sea level and had a hand in the last 50 years or so of corruption and incompetence in New Orleans politics and apparently had a hand in making sure the Corp of Engineers built faulty levees 30 years ago. I love that you think you are sooo much smarter than the rest of us. The typical liberal ego: We know the truth and what is best for you! Your condensending tone with regard to the WW2 vets is disgusting, but it is whats to be expected of people of your ilk. Those vets you disparage are the guys that would go to war to protect your freedom. Apparently "

" I wasn't there for the parade--being home in Pa--but if I were there I woulda both signed your petition and held a sign. It's outrageous that the Uber-Criminal in the White House is not yet on trial, much less still holding office! And while we're at it, let's get rid of Dick Cheney--he's just as guilty, if not more, than Bush. It's sad that ANY vet would or could support or "respect"(?!) Bush after he's carelessly, incompetently and stubbornly sent so many of our best and bravest into a death-zone; poorly funded and equipped to boot! I hate to say this, but it kinda shows just how effective that whole indoctrination process in the Military is, if one can close their eyes to Bush's crimes and "respect" him just 'cuz they've been told that that's what "good soldiers" do! " Mr. Kauber, I for one am grateful that you braved the parade, and took your petitions there. I wish I had been there to sign one! Where do I get a yard sign? I would be happy to pay for one, my "Bush Must Go" signs are deteriorated, and he is still not gone. Those of you who are angry with Mr. K have to remember that it is our country too. We need to take it back, away from this group who tells you that they are doing what's best for you while they are screwing you from behind! We all appreciate the sacrifices that the armed forces have made for our freedoms, but we want our country to go back to being what it was. A little older, a little wiser for what we have been through, but still the land of the free. And peaceful protest is one of those rights that were fought for by our men and women in uniform, whether you agree with it or not. "
