Each Monday, The Citizen features someone from the Finger Lakes community.
This week, we spotlight Jackie Scanlon of Smiley's Town and Country.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A. Helping customers with purchases, and when they come back and really like it, whether it's a plant or decoration.
Q. What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
A. Doing the prom - especially junior prom. All the young girls are nervous and want everything to be perfect with all the right colors.
Q. What would be your dream job, and in what part of the world would you be working?
A. This is it, my friend. I've wanted my own flower shop for 20-something years and we just opened last fall.
Q. What do you like most about living and/or working in the Finger Lakes region?
A. I love the Finger Lakes. I love the atmosphere and that it's not too tourist-y. The sights are beautiful and I'm glad to come home from vacations because it's prettier here than where I went.
Q. If you had the choice of meeting any three people in the world who would they be, and why?
A. Jackie Joyner-Kersee because I'm a runner and at one point she was the third-fastest human in the world. Bob Villa, because I like watching “This Old House” and I do remodeling. And Kip Anderson, the plant guy from “The Victory Garden,” because he's just interesting and he's got good information. I'd like to have him here to talk to us.
Q. If you weren't in your current career field, what would you be doing?
A. I'm also a landlord of my own apartment complex, so if I wasn't doing this I'd probably have bought another rental property.
Q. If you were to win the lottery tomorrow, what's the first thing you'd do?
A. The first thing we'd do is put an addition on the building, put siding and awnings up, put paper stones down and build a greenhouse.
Q. What was your most embarrassing moment on the job?
A. It was fairly recent. When we were delivering flowers last Saturday, we were pushing the limit of time. We weren't late, but they were getting freaked out and that was really embarrassing.
Q. If you were mayor or supervisor of your town/city, what's the first thing you'd change?
A. I'd probably work on revitalizing the Owasco River and making it usable. Look at what Rochester did with the Erie Canal, the value of the homes there went through the roof. I'd like to get more use out of the park as well as downtown and work on something that matters.
Q. Do you have any special plans for the next few months?
A. Just working here, making improvements on the property and building our business.
