While consuming omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent macular degeneration (“Omega-3 also offers added benefit for eyes,” May 25), consumers need to keep in mind that many of the fish high in these fatty acids are also high in mercury content and can cause neurological damage.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, women of child-bearing age and kids should not eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish, due to their high mercury contents. However, fish like wild salmon, tilapia, and flounder are believed to be safe to consume twice per week.
Since this list may be hard for some to memorize, grocery stores should post signs with the FDA advice at their seafood counters as a way of giving back to their customers.
Westchester County has publicly encouraged their local stores to do so, and many have responded positively. But residents of other counties have a right to know this advice as well and A&P should post signs in all of its stores.
While some companies like Safeway and Whole Foods are posting signs nationally, stores in the Auburn area such as Tops, ALDI, and Wegmans are lagging behind. These companies should take the same simple, inexpensive step to protect their customers' health.
