State Assemblyman Gary Finch secured $4,000 to fund a new Assembly Mobility Program for Options for Independence.
Using member item funding Finch was able to purchase wheelchairs for Options' loan closet.

“It's going to help our consumers greatly. The demand for wheelchairs has always succeeded supply,” said Options for Independence executive director Guy Cosentino.

The funds paid for four standard wheelchairs, two pediatric wheelchairs, two extra-wide wheelchairs, three portable folding ramps and one threshold ramp.

The items are now available to be loaned to anyone in the community at no cost to them.

" I would much rather see grant money paying for wheelchairs than being used to build subsidized housing for the wealthy. Imagine how many wheelchairs they could have gotten for the $1.2 Million our City Council wasted on a PRIVATE entrepeneur's logan street pipe dream. "

" Just a note: As a person who spent a couple months in a wheelchair with a leg injury, please be sure to purchase wheelchairs with adjustable leg supports for people who cannot bend a leg. I had to travel by air right after my injury and not one airport through which I passed had a wheelchair to accomodate my leg-in-a-straight-brace. I had to stuff a crutch under my seat and try to prop my leg up on it. Thankfully, when I got home, the local Red Cross' loan closet was able to provide the right kind of chair for my injury. But please keep this in mind when you make your purchases -- not all people who need a wheelchair can bend their legs.... "
