THROOP -- In celebration of life, cancer survivors spoke one after another about their battles with the deadly disease.
Sunday's National Cancer Survivor Day annual celebration brought together more than 50 people whose lives are touched by cancer. The American Cancer Society and its support group, I Can Cope, sponsored the annual event at the Throop Fire Station.

While she is in the middle of her expected six chemotherapy treatments, Beatrice Hazzard said the event and attending the regular I Can Cope meetings give her hope. She was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in December. She attended the event with her two grandchildren and her sister and supporter, Judy Gilfus.

"I like listening to people," the Weedsport resident said. "It helps you understand better."

She also takes inspiration from seeing people like John Grela, a 35-year survivor, giving out angel pins and supporting others. Director of patient and family service for American Cancer Society Kathy Brodsky said that's one of the intentions of the event -- for those further in the journey to inspire others.
