The two worst disasters in the nation's commercial aviation history killed 90 persons within 24 hours and four other planes crashed around the globe - in Japan, Iceland, the Netherlands and Alaska, boosting the total number of dead to at least 170.

It's not taxes, but toilets that have divided Fair Haven. A proposal to place a public restroom in the village's new Voughts Creek park packed residents into the village hall, many with petitions in hand. While the restrooms, which were scheduled to be placed at the northeast corner of Bell Avenue, have been on the drawing board for several years, only recently have neighbors raised concerns that they would be an eyesore.

A five-member search committee will begin interviewing candidates for the position of Cayuga County historian, with a decision expected by the end of June.

egislator Sam DeRosa, R-Auburn, a member of the committee, said about 20 people applied for the position. Malcolm Goodelle, the researcher in the county Historian's Office, has served as temporary historian since October, when then-Historian Tom Eldred was relieved of his duties two months short of his retirement. The historian's office was brought under the auspices of the Real Property Tax Department to streamline it and begin the process of computerizing archival materials
