Old Ways Days takes visitors back to the past

Every year hundreds of people come to the Ward O'Hara Agricultural Museum to see how things were done before the conveniences of electricity, Internet and automobiles made everything available at the push of a button.
This weekend they can do it again with the museum's annual Old Ways Days.

Museum director George Komer said the free event is designed to be family friendly and it tries to especially appeal to children.

“There will be horse-drawn wagons, cooking in old grills and live farm animals,” Komer said.

Children will have the opportunity to see cows, sheep and ponies up close and personal. For the more daring, they can even get a ride, he said. Homemade butter and ice cream will whet appetites to continue learning about the past.

Quilting is a favored pastime in the area, and those interested in the origins can view spinning techniques and quilting demonstrations. A person will also be on hand to make original pots, Komer said.

Beyond all the old ways, Finger Lakes antique power club and Finger Lakes Old Time Farmers showing of farm equipment of the past, there will be the crowning of something new - the 2007 Dairy Princess.

Komer said the event has continued to grow throughout the past years and he can expect anywhere from 400 to 600 people to participate in the events at the museum.
