A first time for everything

POPLAR RIDGE - Nine hits for ten runs, including three home runs and three more triples.

Most softball teams would be thrilled to get that kind of productivity in any one game, but for Southern Cayuga, it was just a start on Tuesday. Senior Molly Osterhoudt led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run and the Chiefs went through 14 batters in the opening frame to pounce on 11th-seeded Bainbridge-Guilford early and eventually win 15-2 in the Section IV, Class C quarterfinal. “We hit the ball, that's for sure,” Chiefs junior Julie Hewitt said. “After Molly's home run, we all just made contact, which is nice to have. The past couple of games, we haven't been hitting the ball that much, but we've been practicing. We knew if we could make the contact, that it would help us win. It was definitely a great game to get us back into it and to get ready for Thursday.”

The Chiefs head to Binghamton to play No. 2 Seton Catholic in the semifinals on Thursday. The state-ranked Saints rolled over Harpursville 10-0 at the same time the Chiefs played the Bobcats.

From garden to table

Farmers markets will open this summer to provide the public with not only fresh fruits and vegetables, but other food items that may expand your definition of a farmers market. Whether its lavender, lettuce or lean meat, all markets offer shoppers an alternative to mass-produced food shipped from across - or outside - the country.
