Attorney Michael Bass announced Wednesday he will run for Cayuga County District Attorney.
Bass, 35, said he will seek endorsement on the Democratic, Independence and Conservative party lines. He previously unsuccessfully ran for district attorney against James Vargason, who is stepping aside after serving as the county's top prosecutor since 1992.

Bass has resigned as director of the St. Lawrence County Public Defender's Office, an office which he has worked for since mid-2006. Bass has previously worked as an Assistant District Attorney and has a criminal defense attorney in private practice.

Jon Budelmann, the current Chief Assistant District Attorney, announced earlier this year he is running.

" How much experience does he actually have as a prosecutor? "

" Haven't known the guy as long, but was the victim on the other side of the court from his client once and it was disgusting. No thank you! "

" If you are right and he left a murder defendant in the lurch two weeks before his trial, Bass is a pretty selfish fellow. and for what? His chances of winning election are not that good. He has issues with loyalty, at least. He certainly does not have the dedication to Cayuga County that Jon Budelmann has proven himself to have. The Democrats are desperate. "

" Please tell all of us when the last time Bass lost a high profile trial? I can't remember the last time. I think it's a great thing. We saw bass for a long time get these people off of these felonies, mabe we can get him to lock them up now! "

" A director of a public defender law program dosen't defend cases. A director runs the office. Your point is? Also its been way more than a year. Lets try for 3 since Bass took the position "

" I know Mike Bass, and have for several years. He is an opportunistic, self centered egomaniac. I'm sure he'll succeed because in Auburn Character doesnt count, just your status. "

" Why does he jump around so much? He was there for only a year. Why the sudden decision to return to Cayuga County and run for District Attorney? Normally prosecutors need to be prepared in advance. You can't stumble through being a District Attorney with last minute decisions. And why did he give St. Lawrence County less than two weeks notice of his resignation? He was scheduled to defend an 18 year old on murder charges in a trial to begin June 13, 2007. Was he not prepared again and is running out of town before he lost another high profile trial? "
