In the Memorial Day Open Wheel extravaganza Saturday evening at Oswego Speedway, Dave Gruel, of Auburn, ran away from the SBS field in the Tony White Memorial 35-lap race.
Shawn Walker led the early laps of the SBS, Tony White Memorial 35, but fans began to watch the Gruel 18 as he raced his way forward from his fifth row starting spot. On lap 17, Gruel saw his opening and made his move in the third turn for the race lead. Once up front, Gruel drove away from the pack.
A yellow flag on lap 31 erased the full straightaway lead of Gruel and gave Mike Bond and Josh Larochelle a chance for the win. Gruel took no chances and drove off on the restart, with the 26 and 10 left to battle for podium finishes. Gruel cruised ahead for the win, with Bond and Larochelle holding spots at the finish.
Auburn's Brian Sobus finished ninth in the race.
