The 84 dedicated volunteers who provide services at Auburn Memorial Hospital donated $236,971 in 2006 - in the form of their own time. A total of 12,625 hours of volunteer service was contributed in 24 areas of the hospital. According to Independent Sector, the estimated value of a volunteer hour in 2006 was $18.77.
“I've always enjoyed helping people,” said Doxie Sherman, who has donated 370 hours to the hospital as a volunteer. “The fun is getting to know people, and I've met all kinds of wonderful people at the hospital.”

After her husband and sister died in the same year, she found herself depressed and feeling as if she had no purpose. “I found myself moping around the house doing nothing. I had no motivation to go out. I needed a purpose. I called Ormie King for advice and he told me they needed volunteers at the hospital,” she recalls. “It's just what I needed. Now I talk to other people, and I realize they have problems too. It's better to think about helping them than focusing inside myself and my own problems.”

On Thursday, May 17, the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was held at Highland Park Golf Club in Auburn. Welcoming remarks were made by Scott Berlucchi, president/CEO, and the invocation was given by the Rev. Charles Walsh, an AMH volunteer. Dr. Deborah Geer, a surgeon, performed on the harp during the luncheon and gave a talk on “Music and Healing.”

Shirley Bayus received an Auxiliary Award for 35 years of service. Rose Gurak, Barbara Emig and Margaret Fordham received 15 Year Awards, and Marilyn Bisner received a 10 Year Award. In addition, Betty Thomas received a certificate for more than 900 hours of service, Floyd Durfee Sr. was honored by 700 hours of service, six volunteers received 300-hour certificates, five volunteers received 200-hour certificates and 33 individuals received certificates for 100 hours of service.

“We appreciate our volunteers' eagerness to help, the valuable role they play and the exceptional way they respond to our needs,” said Judy Santillo, who heads the Volunteer Service department. “Because they make a difference in so many ways, we are thankful to have them as part of the AMH team.”

According to Santillo, she works to create positions that allow volunteers to multi-task, giving the staff extra help and decreasing downtime for volunteers. She has put together multi-task positions in the areas of discharge, the information desk and surgical service. For instance, some discharge volunteers have had “courier” added to their position. Since these volunteers work sporadically, they often have time to run other errands around the hospital. Positions can also be paired based on the volunteer's training. Some information desk volunteers have started making copies for other departments, which doesn't require extra training, while others receive special training for such jobs as delivering labs.

New volunteers in 2006 were: Susan Ahner, Dana Baidetti, Roy Blaisdell, Claudia Bonifay, Penny Cayey, Carolyn Crews, William Donofrio, Margaret Eckett, Margaret Fordham, Marge Leonard, Marge Marino, Jeannette Moore, Constance Schill, Virginia Shepherd, Karen Sumislawki, Lorraine Webster and Robert Weldon.
