Maroons knocked out in quarterfinals
The Auburn softball team's season came to an end Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Rome Free Academy in the Section III, Class AA quarterfinals.

The Maroons trailed 1-0 until Rome added a pair of runs in the sixth inning. But Auburn would not go quietly, putting two runners on base in the final inning.

“It was a well-played game by two good teams,” said Auburn coach Bob Lee, adding that neither team committed an error.

Amanda Daum, Lauren Fedyshyn, Sara Doan, Brianne Raftis and Brittney Babcock had hits for Auburn.

Losing pitcher Babcock allowed seven hits, struck out three and walked three. Kelly Grinnell handled six chances flawlessly to lead the Auburn defense.

DIRT Hall of Fame Classic rained out

With nearly 40 Big-Block Modifieds signed in and the grandstands continuing to fill, a second blast of rain mixed with pounding thunder and lightning flashes forced DIRTcar officials to cancel round three of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on Sunday.

A make-up date is pending at this time.
