Palesh was right to withdraw trash plan

Sunday, May 27, 2007 10:41 PM EDT

The city manager's now abandoned idea of a trash collection fee not only would not have worked, it would not have been accepted by Auburnians.
There are many who not only oppose, but even more simply, cannot afford it.

Picture this: In the middle of the night before trash pickup, people will be out placing their trash in front of someone else's house - not theirs.

Or is Mr. Palesh going to hire a few hundred trash police?

Silly idea.

" Mine would end up down by City Hall in the parking spot marked "City Manager". "

" I live near a "not-for-profit" building that puts out one, maybe two bags of trash a week, the night before pick-up. The next morning, the trash has tripled, and generally has TV's, small furniture and other junk added to it. I can only imagine what would happen if we had to pay per bag or some other hair-brained idea would bring. The good people of this city would get dumped on (literally) by those that simply do not care. "

" Trash police...that's funny...Maybe Mr. Palesh's family would volunteer. "
