Fayetteville-Manlius' Mike Poppleton (1) takes a fall while fighting Auburn's Matt Chadderdon (18) for possession of the ball during the Maroons' 13-8 loss in to the Hornets during a Section III, Class A tournament game in Manlius Friday.
MANLIUS - Losing in the quarterfinals of the Section III, Class A playoffs was obviously disappointing, but the way the Auburn boys lacrosse team did it ran parallel to how the 2007 season ended up.

“In a lot of ways this game was a microcosm of our season,” Auburn coach Steve Crosby said.

The fifth-seeded Maroons fell 13-8 to No. 4 Fayetteville-Manlius on Friday, but not without a fight. Down 6-1 at the half, Auburn scored six in the third quarter to pull within three heading into the final 12 minutes. Coming from the team that started the season 3-9 and finished 8-10 on the heels of a four-game win streak, it wasn't all that surprising.

“(At halftime) things weren't looking too great, but our kids, to their credit, rallied and had a great second half,” Crosby said. “It's an example of the great kids they are. There's no quit in these guys.”

After the Hornets darted out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, the Maroons were able to stifle them for the last nine minutes of the second. F-M scored three of its first four goals, and another in the fourth, when Auburn was in a man-down situation because of a penalty.

Senior Bill Weiman finally found the net for Auburn on a pass from Chris Clifford with 1:45 left in the half. Senior Matt Chadderdon, who is among the top scorers in Section III this season, exploded for five of Auburn's goals in the third period to lead the comeback. The first three of his scores were unassisted, but the last two came on consecutive passes from Mike Fandrich and Matt Hoey within a minute of one another to slice the Hornets' lead to 9-7.

Ethan Gilbert gave F-M back some momentum at the 1:49 mark, scoring off an Anthony Krizman pass. Krizman led the Hornets with four goals - three in the first half - and three assists.

Fayetteville-Manlius blanketed Chadderdon for the remainder of the game, not allowing him to get many good looks. Hoey scored on a pass from senior Derek Anderson in the third and junior Bob Brannigan scored the final goal for the Maroons with 8:12 left in the game.

“It opened things up for some of the other guys who were able to get good looks and capitalize,” Crosby said of the attention Chadderdon received.

For most of the game, Auburn's defense, led by senior B.J. Simmons, played well. They earned the edge in ground balls 30-28, but had a hard time preventing the Hornets from finding their way into the net. Both teams fired 33 shots, but Auburn senior Mark Green had eight saves. Hornets goalie Eric Shuettenberg, who entered the game with a save percentage of .580, finished the game with seven saves.

Matt Taylor and Blair Hanson each added three scores for the Hornets, and Taylor also distributed five assists. The Hornets travel to Cicero-North Syracuse High School on Tuesday to play No. 1-ranked West Genesee.

In addition to Simmons, Anderson, Chadderdon, Green and Weiman, the Maroons will also graduate John Lennox, Eric Giannone and Eli Lieby this year.
