It's the 20th year of the best local warm-up to summer.
Even if there is more unseasonably cool weather, the Welcome in Summer Party will beckon to all things warm this Sunday.
“It's like having one big reunion. People start coming out of their winter holes and seeing each other again,” said Jerry Vevone, the chairperson of the event.
The party is the annual fund-raiser for the 80-volunteer Owasco Fire Department.
The department has raised $250,000 in the last 20 years of summer parties. But it must keep on fundraising.
Its latest need is a new ambulance that won't run cheap. Vevone estimated the price is $90,000 to $100,000. The repairs for the current 1993-era ambulance are “starting to nickel and dime us,” Vevone said.
The past parties have bought items like $36,000 worth of rescue tools, including a thermal imaging camera that helps spot embers that can reignite fires.
The party offsets local taxes by finding a much more fun way to fund public safety needs, Vevone said.
Coming full circle at the 20th anniversary mark of the party is the party's rock ‘n' roll band entertainment.
Nik and the Nice Guys, took the stage back in 1987 and other years, will play 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The band boasts 11 musicians and performers, including the Les Femmes de Nik, female singers and dancers, and the Niktones horn section.
Their goal: get the audience dancing. They'll likely have 3,000 people to shake into action. That many have attended in the past. The Prison City Rockers will open from 7 to 9 p.m.
The party is 21 and over. No coolers are allowed, but beer and barbecue eats are sold at the park.
The Owasco Fire Department has a lot of pride in its summer party.
“It's the best party in the area. The location, being Emerson Park, it's the best location in the county,” Vevone said.
