After what the Skaneateles softball team pulled off on Thursday, only the sky is now the limit.
The ninth-seeded Lakers shook up the Section III, Class B-1 playoff picture by upsetting No. 1 Westhill 6-4 in nine innings. By getting one hit from all nine players, Skaneateles rocked a team that had won 17 games heading into their last one this season, including two wins over the Lakers by a combined 19 runs. They advance to play No. 4 Solvay on Saturday in the semi-finals.
“It was absolute pandemonium,” Lakers coach Bob Braunitzer said. “I've never seen the girls this happy. They were screaming and jumping on top of each other. It was amazing.”
Alex Hughes earned the win in the pitcher's circle after throwing the complete game, scattering six hits, two walks and striking out five. She also knocked in the winning runs in the top of the ninth, scoring Kara Buehler on a base hit up the middle and then scoring herself on the last of two Westhill errors. Buehler also made her one hit count, ripping a two-run double just prior to scoring herself.
The Warriors scored two runs in the first before the Lakers cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning and tied it in the fourth.
Senior Kate Minturn led the infield with two key defensive plays at third base, including an outstanding grab to end the game after the Warriors began to mount a comeback. The Lakers, who won six regular season games, have now defeated opponents 14-4 in two playoff wins.
“People asked me where I would rank this win among all the others I've ever had,” Braunitzer said. “After how we started this season and what we did today, I'd put it right near the top.”
