Mr. Palesh, why should we people of Auburn give you the houses that are crumbling and deteriorating when we have code inspectors? Get rid of the code inspectors if they are not doing their job.
Is it true that those in law enforcement are legally obligated to take a criminal complaint from a citizen and the courts are to decide whether or not the criminal complaint is valid and not the police or other law enforcement individuals? If you are not allowed to file a complaint then I guess no crime has been committed then, even if it was by someone in law enforcement.

Lee Iacocca, retired CEO of Chrysler, should be a candidate for 2008 president of United States.

Where is our vice president hiding? Underneath the White House?

School teachers should reinforce parents' instruction that their children ride their bicycles safely on the shoulder in the same direction as vehicles. It is the parent's responsibility to nurture and build character into their children whereas it is not the teachers' job to teach sex education, alternative sexual preferences and situational ethics.

" Commie Karl is calling someone else's remarks useless, now thats funny! Karl, ALL your remarks are useless and ignorant. You're always sympathizing with the poor innocent Islamic Facists because mean old W wants to hurt them. You clearly don't cherish your freedom and therefore don't deserve to keep it. That goes for you too AJ, mr "thats american capitalism for ya" For your information capitalism is the very thing that has brought wealth and freedom to this country, kinda like communism brings poverty and facism (another great thing we learned from the Ruskies, right karlie?) "

" Keven...sigh...another useless remark that , as usual, adds nothing at all to the discussion. Just go back to your Ann Coulter novel and stir your milk...Anyhoo, AJ, while I recognize and appreciate your frequent support/agreement on my posts, I would suggest to you that if you need "something to do", have you ever checked out all the great State Parks in and around Ithaca? How about Frozen Ocean Mx park on the weekends, or the other "Outlaw" tracks...much of all this would cost far less than what it would cost yourself to "enjoy" a casino my friend, and you'd be helping out honorably run local businesses. But, to each his own! "

" The fact that there is prison in the middle of town has already caused crime, alcoholism and increased familial problems in our area. The families move here to be near their hubbies and then settle in here. "

" While I normally agree with Karl on most issues, I would have to take exception to his position on the casinos. I think it would be a good thing for the area financially. Sure, there may be an increase in gambling addictions, but so be it. It comes down to personal responsibility. Regarding Atlantic city, the slums were always there. As I understand from what I've read several years ago, the casinos agreed to put enough of the money they would earn back into the community to eradicate the slums. It is apparent that they did not hold up their end of the bargain. But of course that is capitalist America for you. I would welcome a local casino as it would bring something to do. As a responsible gambler I budget what I can afford for entertainment purposes and leave it at that. "

run down houses wrote on May 25, 2007 6:18 PM:

" oh...my GOD! What an ignorant statement to make regarding run down houses. To suggest that the city get rid of code enforcement officers because they are not doing their jobs. DAH! have you even considered the fact that maybe the homeowners are not doing their jobs, by letting their property go to hell? If you ask me, I think the city should impose a $500.00 a day fine on repeat violators, resulting in a lien being placed on the property. These homes and buildings are a disgrace to our community, and the city needs to turn the flame up under the butts of negligent property owners. I commend Mr. Palesh and his efforts being made in regards to this problem. Some other things he's doing he needs help with, but so far he's on the right track with this. "

" If you think casinos are good for a community just go to Atlantic City. Yeah the casinos are nice, but go one block away and its slums.....lots and lots of slums. "

Valerie Smith wrote on May 25, 2007 5:03 PM:

" I've visited Turning Stone Casino twice (only for concerts, though) and even though it is a very nice building, it has its own (expensive) shops and hotels - which means that if we were to get one in or around Auburn (or really anywhere, for that matter), none of the local businesses would profit. Because a casino can sell all sorts of foods and drinks and other souvenirs, they can charge their own prices. And patrons wouldn't want to leave their cozy, all-in-one casino just to go out and buy something a little cheaper on the next block. "

Steve B wrote on May 25, 2007 4:32 PM:

" I don't know much about the casino issue but why not look at how other casinos like Turning Stone have affected its surrounding community, not casinos in Russia, Russian leaders fail at most everything. Anyway, does anyone know if alcoholism, crime rates, and familial problems have been on the rise near turning stone? "

Karl L wrote on May 25, 2007 4:11 PM:

" As reported on CNN today: Russia has just re-criminalized all their casinos and gambling industries due to the problems they've had with corruption and bribery scandals, and in recognition of the awful social toll that it has taken on the Russian people, HURRAH! We could learn a lot from those Ruskies! Whoever wrote in claiming that a casino would be a good thing for the area is living in fantasyland. You'd have an influx of people, sure, but at the expense of a rise in crime, alcoholism and increased familial problems--it's not worth it. "

Good News---No benefits for PT work wrote on May 25, 2007 2:18 PM:

" Part time should not get benefits, this includes city and county workers also. No other places "that I know of" have benefits for part time workers. Why should the tax payers of Auburn be responsible for this? "

Casinos wrote on May 25, 2007 1:38 PM:

" So because you have some irresponsible fools that will over spend you believe this will hurt an entire city? Do some research people, there have Casinos all over the country and it has helped the economy. It's funny that a town with a prison in the middle worries about a casino. I'd be more concerned about the change in law that allowed their families to live amongst us. Just think for a moment, the casinos will not make money if the area is not safe for patrons. Maybe you should go down to Ft Lauderdale and see the Seminoles Hard Rock Cafe and Casino, that'll change your minds!!! Lots of people enjoy and can afford a night at the tables, it doesn't cost much at all. Get out of the 20th Century, only change can help Auburn. "

NO Casino! wrote on May 25, 2007 12:48 PM:

" Someone wrote yesterday under the gambling addiction article, "Are we going to close the lakes because we are addicted to boating and fishing?" This argument make no sense! Fishing and boating help local businesses in obvious ways. A casino on the other hand will hurt the local ecomomy if local residents go to gamble (and they will) because after a day at the casino the person won't have enough money to spend on things they would normally buy, like new fishing equipment.
