Seymour gets latest titles

Nothing brings people to the library like a bestseller. Here at Seymour Library, we've got great news for patrons who can't wait to get their hands on the latest books. We've subscribed to a service that quickly brings us the most popular fiction and nonfiction titles and that provides multiple copies of the books that are most in demand.
What does that mean for readers? We'll have all of the books on the New York Times bestseller list and more. As the demand goes up for the book (remember “The Da Vinci Code”?) we'll have additional copies. We're also about to receive a new collection of 1,100 books, all published in the last three years, all of them the most popular fiction, nonfiction, biographies and mysteries available.

And when “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” hits the shelves at the stroke of midnight on Saturday, July 21, we'll have 35 copies ready to distribute. (We'll be open at midnight, too, for all of those Harry Potter fans who can't wait to start reading.) Before long, patrons will be able to reserve a copy of Harry Potter, so watch our Web site (www.seymourlibrary.org) or our monthly newsletter for details.

Our first shipment of books with the service arrived earlier this month, and the titles offer a sense of the range of new books that Seymour Library will have. We just received “Simple Genius” by David Baldacci, “The Woods” by Harlan Coben and “Land of Mango Sunsets” by Dorothea Benton Frank, all from the New York Times fiction bestseller list. We have Lee Iacocca's “Where Have All the Leaders Gone?,” a New York Times nonfiction bestseller, and Michael Beschloss' “Presidential Courage,” featured on a recent cover of Newsweek. We have the Oprah Book Club selection “Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography” by Sidney Poitier and the self-help book “Living the Truth: Transform Your Life through Power,” by television host Keith Ablow.

And that's just a sampling. We'll be getting more books on almost a daily basis, so be sure to stop in often and see what's new.

The service also will help us better serve local book clubs, who need multiple copies of a book. Since the library leases rather than buys the books, we can get the number of copies that are needed without the expense of buying them.

When you find a book you like, you can slow down a little and enjoy it. We've extended the borrowing time for new books to 14 days, instead of 10, and if no one else is waiting for the book, you can renew it.

This deluge of new books means some rearranging. Instead of keeping recent nonfiction and biographies in the upstairs display area for a year, we'll display them for six months. Then they'll be shelved in our permanent nonfiction areas - psychology, religion, social sciences, finance, health, cookbooks and gardening downstairs; the arts, literature, travel and history upstairs. We don't expect you to have these locations memorized - so if you can't find something, please ask.

The idea behind all of these changes is to improve customer service. One of the ways we can do that is to have the books that are most in demand. If there's a book that you think ought to be in our collection, fill out one of the yellow forms on the main desk. If there's a way we can serve you better, leave a note in one of our new suggestion boxes. We want to hear your ideas.
