No holes-in-one to report this week but there are results from the Dutch Hollow Junior Invitational held on Saturday. Brittany Siechen and Morgan Yoder shot a better ball 76 to win the Whitworth Division. Mindy Fowler and Virginia Porten came in second.
Chris Shoemaker and Joe Hefler shot 71 and won the Hogan Division comprised of players in grades eighth, ninth and 10th. Brian Edmunds and Jeff Baldetti were second. Other local finishers in the Hogan were Nick Shrimpton and Eric Hlywa, Thomas Pezzulo and Michael Lischak, Connor O'Toole and Bryan Stokes-Cawley, Bobby Gage and James Cutillo, Jay Stith and Ty Lorey, Andrew LeBrun and Vin Pedulla, and Calvin Davis and Josh Marshall.

In the Nicklaus Division, with any player on the team in grades 11th or 12th, Josh Schoonmaker and Mike Spicer shot a 69. Brian Walker and C.J. Shaw were second with 73. Other local finishers were Chris Johnson and Connor Wisniewski, Bobby Dushatinski and Jon Poweski, and Matt Plis and Colin Parry.

This was a great opportunity for juniors to play tournament golf. Forty-eight players completed the event with Bill Galloway handling the first tee as the kids teed off for the day.

It was good to hit the Pro-Am circuit again with two events last week. Tuesday was at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin where I was accompanied by Mike Guarino, Will Hartquist and Lars Lorentzon. Will hit the stick about five times with shots that rattled around and finished just a few inches from the hole. The highlight was a 140-yard fairway bunker shot that almost went in on the 18th hole.

Friday's tournament was at Seven Oaks at Colgate. Tom Taylor, Mike Brigandi and Larry “King” Shaffer helped me out on our journey around this great layout. It is always a pleasure to play there. Seven Oaks is on any given day as much golf course as any player would want to handle. The CNY Senior circuit is a relaxed atmosphere with great camaraderie and a lot of laughs. If you are 50 years or older and want to have a fun day on the golf course while still playing competitively, and work on your game under tournament conditions, call a local senior pro and get yourself entered. There are still about 18 tournaments left to play on some of the areas finest golf courses.

Did you know the purpose of a USGA Handicap is to enable players of different abilities to compete on an equal basis? The system disregards high scores that bear little relation to the to the player's ability and promotes continuity by making a handicap index continuous from one season to the next. The basic premises that underline the USGA Handicap system are that each player tries to make the best score at every hole in every round, and that the player posts every acceptable round for handicapping purposes and for peer review.

A handicap index is portable from course to course, and is adjusted by using a course rating table available at every USGA rated golf course. A course rating is the USGA's mark that indicates the playing difficulty of a course for a scratch golfer under normal conditions based on yardage and other obstacles that affect scoring.

A slope rating is the measurement of the relative difficulty of a course for players who are not scratch golfers.
