Good riddance to Paul Wolfowitz. It was time for him to resign and move on. With a Democratic Congress, he was not going to escape the fact that he played a key role in orchestrating the Iraq war and held the second slot at the Pentagon under a Republican administration.
Wolfowitz's exit, however, ends a two-year run at the development bank that was marked by controversy from the very beginning. He had no business doing what he did on behalf of his girlfriend - regardless of his powerful connections in Washington.
He should have been setting an example of how to act at the World Bank and instead took advantage of his access to high ranking officials and so undermined a system that should isolate itself from dirty politics and cronyism.
