Man faces reckless endangerment charge
An Auburn man allegedly put a two-year-old in a headlock until the toddler's feet were left dangling in the air, the Auburn Police Department reported.

Jeffrey S. Sweeting, of Apt. 1, 20 Barber St., was charged Friday, May 18, with the misdemeanors of second-degree reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child and petit larceny.

Sweeting is also accused of taking a wallet of another victim during the domestic Tuesday, May 14.

The toddler was taken for treatment at Auburn Memorial Hospital, police said.

A temporary order of protection was issued in Auburn City Court Monday. The case was adjourned until June 21.

Police say man smashed windshield

A 21-year-old was charged by the Auburn Police Department Sunday with allegedly smashing a brick through a windshield of a 1994 Honda, police reported.

Brandon A. Dutcher, of 108 Ross Place, Auburn, was charged with the misdemeanor of fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Dutcher allegedly believed his friends had been disrespected by the occupants of the vehicle, police said. He allegedly pounded on the windshield before using the brick around 11:40 p.m. Sunday, police said.

APD taking part in seat belt checkpoints

The Auburn Police Department is posting four extra units for road patrol between now and Saturday, June 2, during the “Click It or Ticket - Buckle Up New York” campaign.

Police agencies across the state are setting up traffic checkpoints and assigning officers exclusively to traffic enforcement during a saturated enforcement campaign that is held every May and November.

The APD has written 300 to 400 tickets during past “Buckle Up New York” periods, said Tom Weed, the APD's traffic enforcement officer.

A $20,000 grant pays for APD officers to work overtime exclusively dedicated to ensuring motorists are wearing seat belts and following other traffic safety rules.

The patrol times will vary throughout the day, Weed said.

Dollar General gives $8,000 grant

Nationwide retailer Dollar General recently awarded the Cayuga/Seneca Community Action Agency an $8,000 grant.

The agency will use the money for literacy and basic education programs in Auburn.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has provided grants to 335 nonprofit organizations this year.

Dollar General has stores in Auburn and Weedsport.

" hey drugs, drunks, seatbelts- Let's say an adult who usually doesn't wear a seatbelt is taking their little kid in the car to run some errands and the adult (who is supposed to set an example) doesn't use their seatbelt so the little kid doesn't either and then they get into a car accident and the little child is injured...you going to write a comment then on seatbelt use?? " We all know seat belts can save lives and we have a seat belt law but doesn't it simply come down to each individual's willingness to protect themselves? There are so many more immediate concerns that our police need to concentrate on. Drugs are an imminent threat to every family. Drunks on the road are a danger to anyone who drives. Spend the money on something that is going to make a difference. Checking for seat belts is a defensive posture when it comes to prevention of injuries. The law enforcement team needs to concentrate on a good offense. What the police are really protecting is the insurance companies. Let the insurers deny benefits to anyone injured while not wearing seat belts - no matter who is at fault. That will certainly take a bite out of the seat belt problem. Click it or ticket is a public affairs gimmick invented by a politician to get elected. Fraud, waste, and abuse... of funds entrusted to government leadership "
