AURELIUS - Elaine Waldschmidt hadn't left the area in months. She mostly stayed around her Genesee Street home about three miles west of Half Acre, focusing on her studies as a returning fine arts student at Wells College. In recent weeks, she crammed for finals and after finishing her exams last week, she decided to take Monday off and get out of town. When she returned, she arrived to see a front yard that bore little resemblance to the one she had left in the morning. Her roadside hedge of Honey Locust trees towering 30-feet tall and dating back at least 100 years, had been hacked off at dozens of joints and some even right down at their bases. It turns out, the cutting was all done in the interest of keeping branches away from power lines, and had been completed by a crew from New York State Electric and Gas.
