Parking enforcement in downtown Auburn unfair

Monday, May 21, 2007 9:57 AM EDT

This is in regard to the discussion which took place between the mayor and police chief regarding parking tickets. I was a victim of such. One morning I parked on Green Street near Clark. It was not time to “feed the meter” so I went to the Boyle Center to take care of my business.
As I was walking down Green Street I saw a “meter man” standing by my car, pad and pen in hand, his eyes glued to the timepiece and a smile on his face.

As I approached, he started writing. Needless to say, I was not amused.

" I used to play the odds & not put money in the meters..That was until they hired the meter 'cop'...I swear that he has a 6th sense...No matter where I parked ..He got me...so needless to say ...I always feed the meter now...I get a kick out of him...This guy is good & I'll bet he's increased the income from meters by a goodly amount.. " I am sorry that my equipment does not have a state seal that shows that I have been tested for accuracy like your gas pumps. Perhaps Assemblyman Finch should do some work and take care of this problem because you elected him to do so. "

" Rules are rules and they are not meant to be broken. Smile or no smile the person was doing a job. You knew the time would soon approach to pay for your prime parking spot, so what's the problem. Why didn't you park in the Boyle Center parking lot? This parking fine, as trivial as it is, is the price you squeaky types have to pay. And as far as the welcome to Auburn crap, at least it shows Auburn has some sort of governence. "

" Many times I have put money in the meters and the meter does NOT give the right amount of time. Sometimes you get about 17 minutes for your half hour! I complained to the meter man one day and he said it is not his job. Well, who is in charge of keeping the meters working properly? It is unfair that I have to put extra money in meters when I go down for lunch and then be worried that the meter is running fast and will run out before I can finish my lunch. "

" I agree, that meter man makes it his business to stand there and wait for meters to run out and does not bother to even look up to see if the vehicle owner might be headed to his/her car. This is very unfriendly to out of towner visitors as well. Welcome to Auburn, here's your ticket! "
