Toto isn't living in Kansas anymore

Saturday, May 19, 2007 10:41 PM EDT

Each Sunday, The Citizen features a pet which is available for adoption.
This week, we spotlight Toto from the Finger Lakes SPCA.

Q. Who is your best friend?

A. There is the cutest Border Collie puppy in the whole world in the room next to mine. His name is Riley and we have become best friends.

Q. Do you know any special tricks?

A. Nothing really special, but I have perfected the “sit” thing.

Q. Do you get along with other animals?

A. Yes. I get along with dogs. I actually lived with a wonderful dog named Barnaby - and he came in here with me - but he's in foster care right now and we're all hoping for an adoption for him.

Q. Who do you prefer, adults or children?

A. I'm good with both.

Q. How often do you like to be groomed?

A. I had a bath the other day. It was wonderful. But I could use a haircut and manicure too. To answer the question, brushing is a must every day, other stuff about once every six weeks.

Q. When you go to your new home, what is the first thing you want to do?

A. I want to see the crate. I like spending some time every day in my crate - it is a safe place for me.

Q. If you could visit any place in the world, where would that be?

A. That's a no-brainer. I want to go to Oz!

Q. Do you have any advice for The Citizen's readers?

A. Yes. It is flea and mosquito season. Please, please, please, have your dogs tested for heartworms and make sure you provide heartworm preventive and flea control for all of your four-legged companions. They'll love you for it.

Toto

Breed: Cairn Terrier

Age: 3 1/2 years

Comments from the SPCA: Toto checked into the shelter about two weeks ago. He told us the accommodations are very nice, but he's looking for a more permanent arrangement - and the sooner the better.

Toto is a Cairn Terrier and is chestnut in color. He came to us because his former family didn't really have enough time to spend with him.

Toto has been an indoor-only dog and certainly wishes to remain that way. When outdoors, he has been on a run and seemed to do very well with that. His former owners describe him as playful and friendly, he has received “home training” and does know the command to sit. Toto has lived with other dogs, so he would make a great companion to an already resident canine. He is accustomed to bathing, nail clipping, brushing and combing. He is house trained, but after being in a kennel for a while, he will probably need a bit of a refresher.

Toto has been neutered, is heartworm negative and up to date on vaccinations. He is ready to go as soon as he and his new guardian find each other. The adoption donation for Toto is $92.50, which includes all of the above, licensing, a training video, a pet survival guide CD, food samples, coupons and many other items.

Anyone interested in visiting with Toto can do so at the FLSPCA-CNY from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Call the shelter at 253-5841 for more information.
