Westminster Presbyterian Church, at 17 William St. in Auburn, is a very busy place this spring.
The Westminster Presbyterian Church Adult Forum series will be exploring what Presbyterians believe about a variety of theological subjects. Join Pastor Phil Windsor and Elder Jill Fandrich to learn more about the distinctive beliefs of Presbyterians.

The Adult Forum meets in the Social Room at 10:45 a.m. immediately following the Fellowship Time after worship. Topics include: May 20 - “What Presbyterians Believe about Pentecost and the Holy Spirit,” May 27 - no class and June 3 - “What Presbyterians Believe about the Trinity.” Everyone is welcome.

The following Westminster members were part of a Cayuga-Syracuse team who visited South Korea April 12 through 19: veteran Ray Cornwall, Sue Querns, Kurt and Marilyn Lavin, Candy Dominick, Jill Fandrich and Linda Russell. The team included veterans who served in Korea and members of a peacemaking delegation.

While in Korea, they worshipped, visited historic sites, learned about the vital Presbyterian church in South Korea and made friends with Korean brothers and sisters in Seoul. The veterans were warmly welcomed with great appreciation for their roles in making South Korea a free country. Brian Dominick joined the group for many of its activities. Brian is living in Seoul and teaching English in city schools. Thanks to everyone at Westminster for your gift of peace to our friends in Korea. Hearts are changed one smile, one handshake at a time, and you have done so much.

The Westminster Book Group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, in the Social Room to discuss “Cold, Sassy Tree,” a novel by Olive Ann Burns. Looking ahead in June, they will be reading “Under the Banner of Heaven” by John Krakauer and in July “Gift from the Sea” by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The group normally meets the last Monday of the month, but the date was changed to Tuesday this month due to the Memorial Day holiday. Everyone is welcome.

Faith and Film Night at Westminster will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 24, in the Social Room where they will watch “The Widow of St. Pierre.” Join fellow film buffs for an evening of free entertainment, popcorn and soda. The themes of justice, mercy and redemption will be discussed following the movie.

€ The Cayuga County Area Interfaith Ministries, including the Auburn Area Clergy, are sponsoring a free informational presentation on gambling addiction at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, at the Auburn Public Theater, 108 Genesee St., Auburn. Stephen Capozzi, education specialist for the Finger Lakes Council on Alcoholism and Other Addictions, will speak on “When the Chips are Down: Recognizing and Addressing Gambling Addiction.” For more information, call the Rev. Doug Taylor-Weiss at 252-5721.

The timing of this presentation is fitting, as our community and leaders discuss the possibility of allowing a casino in our city. We all struggle with various temptations and addictions, some worse than others. A casino in our city would have devastating and far reaching affects on the well-being of our families; our greatest asset.

€ Vendors/crafters are wanted for the annual chicken barbecue and flea market held Saturday, June 2, at United Church of Auburn on Metcalf Drive. Vendor space is available for only $10. Art, crafts and flea market items welcome. Call the church office at 252-4397 for a registration form.

Have a great week everyone, and please send me your good news. Remember, God loves you so much.

“If seeds in the black earth can turn into such beautiful roses, what might not the heart of a person become in its long journey toward the stars?”
