Two Cents

When Billy Kufs makes a point, the liberal media calls him angry. But when Tom McNabb, Guy Cosentino or Murray Lynch make a point, the liberal media calls them passionate.
I agree it's about time we go way outside the district for a new school superintendent. I think it's about time we broke up the good old boy system around here.

I don't believe anyone who is a retired teacher, who is married to a teacher or who is related to a teacher should be allowed on the school board. I believe we have allowed the foxes to watch the chicken coop for long enough.

Why doesn't the state, county, towns, etc. pick up the roadside litter before mowing? Picking it up makes much more sense than grinding it up.

I saved so much money at the dollar stores in Auburn, I'm just about broke.

I had a good laugh at the article about Pope canonizing the Brazilian saint who was credited with allegedly 𔄝,000 miracle cures” I wonder if he helped any amputees re-grow their arms or legs?

It's about time the city got rid of that divisive human rights office. It's one good thing Mr. Palesh has done for Auburn.

" Exactly, you should of done a walk through when you first rented the place. Secondly, landlords don't make as much as you think for rentals in Auburn, NY. Eg. replacing a roof cost roughly 10k. Replacing a furnace cost roughly 6k. Then there is cleaning fees, yard maintenance, snow removal, taxes, water and sewer bills, and small maintenance like broken windows, light bulb replacement etc... Above all landlords have to hope that tenants don't wreck their apartment. Even "good" tenants don't treat a place like its their own. Take it from a former landlord and former reealtor that has been to hundreds of rental properties. "

While staffing and programs in most areas have stayed about the same, the number of special education teachers has skyrocketed. This is the result of state and federal mandates (e.g. Bush's No Child Left Behind, etc). If you have a problem with your school taxes you should take it up with state and federal lawmakers, not local school boards as there really isn't very much they can do about it. "

" You can't lump all section 8 "losers" into one category. The fact is that the little people are kept down and even when they do try someone always comes along to kick them back down. This landlord, "self-proclaimed Republican", who says that the democrats like to keep us down by offering us accessable welfare and foodstamps which in turn keeps us dependant on it, is doing the same to us little people who have to rent from slum lords (and be duped out of our security deposit) because they just can't get there grubby little hands on enough money. "

to mb wrote on May 16, 2007 6:15 PM:

The liberal leaders you depend on have convinced you that all discrimination is illegal but it is not. We all discriminate every day in our decisions. I heard there is a 3 year waiting list for section 8 applicants - Hahaha. Too many people sucking off socialist teet of NY. Glad I'm not there paying 57% higher taxes with a horrible economy and no jobs. Hehehe. P.S. word of advise, if the landlord did not do a walk through at the beginning, then how can you be liable? Its just your word against his. "

When I moved into this house there were plenty of things wrong that I just didn't complain about becuase they wern't something that I couldn't live with. Now I am kicking myself in the butt, because I have been charged from my security deposit more than $300.00 for damages that wern't caused by me or my family. Mind you this landlord never did a walk through with me to determine if anything had been damaged before I moved in and now I am being charged for the previous tenants wrong doings. Im sorry that my political views have steered this landlord to believe that because I am a liberal I am worth ripping off, well I guess I should have expected that from a dirty republican who considers all democrats and liberals to be on welfare and dependant on the system. This landlord also stated that he would never rent to section 8 people, isnt that discrimination? I will be taking action on this matter to do whatever I have to to get my $300.00 back. "

" Local property tax levies in New York state totaled $38 billion in 2005 which is an increase of more than $11 billion since 2000 or a 42% increase. School taxes are the largest part of the property tax levy, Did Star keep you home? Would you move here? Can't find a job, wonder why? Out of control school boards, who rubber stamp spending policies of administrators and nobody votes. Was there a reason that the Citizen didn't publish this information, or maybe it didn't fit into their personal agenda. "

OBVIOUSLY downtown living is not for pet loving, arthritic ridden seniors or young families with children in stollers. there are several people who like the activity, dining, shopping and central location. p.s. most of the builings downtown have parking for tenants not offered to the public.......how about a fact-check. Tenant do not pay a fair amount of taxes wrote on May 16, 2007 2:21 PM:

" Tenants do not pay a fair amount taxes. I’ll also go slowly so you can understand. House A is a one family home at 1500 Sq.ft. It is assessed at 120K, and paying taxes on that amount. House B is a rental duplex at 3000 Sq Ft. The duplex is also assesses at 120k. So both houses are assessed at the same amount BUT house B is twice as big as house A and has 2 families living in them and using the cities services. The problem is according to the city assessor who I spoke with is that rental properties do not sell as well as single family homes, thus the difference in assessment. It’s really the cities fault for not assessing properly. "

Renters pay tax... wrote on May 16, 2007 1:50 PM:

" To say that renters don't pay their share of the taxes in the community is absurd. I'll do this slowly so we can all follow along: Taxes are levied against the property owner. The property owner pays the tax. The property owner charges rent to the tenants. The property owner passes the tax burden to the tenants as part of the rental charges. Furthermore, a homeowner that occupies their home can deduct the property tax expenses on the income tax returns. The renter doesn't have that privilege. Also, remember that the elderly that own a home will have a smaller school tax burden than a comparably assessed property owned by a younger taxpayer because they qualify for additional STAR program relief. If the elderly person is also a veteran they receive even more STAR program relief. Now, if you want to have have a real discussion then let's discuss why property based taxing is detrimental to a community... "

" Who in there right mind would want to live in downtown Auburn? No Place Convenient to park your car.And when you have guests come to visit you they will have to pay to park their cars, to come see you. You have go up stairs, imagine carrying groceries upstairs, No picnic. You could not have children and try to live downtown, no way. Even if an eldery person or couple lived downtown, Most older folks I know, have bad knees or are arthritic and can barely move, how will they go up and downstairs? No lawn for your dog to Poop on. Come on people, this isn't NYC, It's Auburn, for crying out loud. It's a nice (well maybe someday) family oreinted small city, let's focus on making Auburn a great place for kids to grow up in. Let's make Auburn more kid friendly. The only reason people go downtown anymore is to bank, see their lawyer, or their doctor. That's all that's there. "

" I pay school taxes even though MY children are no longer in school. See- that is how it works to continue a community. One generation supports the other -then on and on. School taxes are a benefit to the community in the end. If children in a community are supported and appreciated, then that community thrives. DO you see what I am getting at here? ANd now- do you see why I have a problem with these comments and the way the school board KOWTOWs to the superintendent? See, I vote for the board members that I think will do what I want- NOT what the superintendent wants. They report to ME- not the superintendent. As a community, we need to hold the school board accountable for their decisions. I hope the members elected ( reelected) read this and know- I am watching them. And I DEMAND a search for the new superintendent. If they so much as try to hire someone without a search, I will portest very loudly, because I can- because they report to ME. "

Bad School vote wrote on May 16, 2007 1:05 PM:

" I agree that Auburn’s people just don’t get it when it comes to school; budgets and elected officials. It’s like they want taxes to increase, and I am trying to figure out why. Maybe it’s because the majority of people rent and have a lot of children in school, and it’s up to the other homeowners to provide an education for their children. Or maybe it’s because the majority of the voters have children, and stick the elderly with paying the taxes because the elderly own a home. Since the people seem not to care about the rising taxes, I propose a tax of 100.00 for each child you have in school in extra taxes, then maybe the people with no children and the elderly can live in their home a bit longer. Some of you will say that’s not fair to charge extra for each child in school, but it’s as fair as charging people with no children and the elderly school taxes. No difference. "
