Cayuga County sheriff's deputies arrested a 55-year-old Port Byron man in connection with a burglary at the Howland Island property formerly owned by John and Carol Roberts. The man was nabbed by deputies after an “alert area resident” reported seeing a vehicle heading away from the property Wednesday night, said Lt. John Lamphere of the Cayuga County Sheriff's Department. Stewart was arrested at his home after being located by Deputy Pete Vanditto. The suspect was found with wood lattice paneling identified to be from the Roberts' property, Lamphere said.

Auburn City Hall employees are mourning the death of one of their colleagues this week. Elaine Schmidt, who worked in the treasurer's office for 23 years, died last week after a long illness. She was 61. To honor the longtime employee, black bunting has been placed on City Hall. Mayor Melina Carnicelli will also memorialize Schmidt during Thursday night's City Council meeting.
