Summer will start with a reveille in Union Springs with the five talented members of the Syracuse Symphony Brass quintet playing some American favorites. With a program that begins with the national anthem, trumpets through a medley by George M. Cohan including “Grand Old Flag” and dances around Gershwin's “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess,” among other selections.
The SSO is known for its concerts featuring patriotic and popular favorites, Broadway tunes, Big Band nostalgia and more, all of which will make an appearance at the quintet's Frontenac performance.
The brass quintet will start off the five-part summer performance series known as FLAGS at the Frontenac. FLAGS is Fingerlakes Arts, Grants and Services, Inc. of Geneva and is co-supporting the event with the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program. According to coordinator Pat Deller, it is FLAGS' job to route money to artists in under served counties, resulting in professional-level performances in even the smallest of municipalities. Other sponsors of the event include Cayuga National Bank, the Hecht Foundation and The Citizen.
“We think this is an opportunity to bring professional level entertainment to Union Springs as well as to introduce some people to the museum,” Deller said.
Deller said the museum would like to make this an annual event. A committee of six people including Nancy Nelson, Pat Kimber, Dean Tanner, Mark Ryan, Deller and Linda Bower have contributed to the grant and program series.
Because the Frontenac Museum has a maximum capacity, Union Springs High School will be the backup venue if the ticket sales exceed 150.
Other events in the Frontenac series will include a bluegrass concert on June 30, a film, “Legend of Fire Fly Marsh” on July 7, the presentation of a new mural in the museum on Aug. 4, complete with a discussion of the creative process and a performance of Latin American salsa and Cuban songs on Sept. 15 called Cubanana.
