In Section III, Class B, Division II boys lacrosse, every goal is huge.

Jordan-Elbridge midfielder James Hohm (12) is checked by Cazenovia's Benjamin Dewan during Monday's match at Jordan-Elbridge High School.
Unfortunately for Jordan-Elbridge, one goal was all that made the difference in its game with Cazenovia on Monday. The Eagles, who trailed by three at one point early in the first half, made an impressive comeback to tie the game at six before ultimately falling to the Lakers for the second time this season, 10-9. Cazenovia defeated them 9-4 on April 10.

“I thought we played really well,” Jordan-Elbridge coach Rick Young said. “But (Cazenovia's) goalie was really good. He made all the difference.”

Patrick Cooney made 17 saves for the Lakers, including nine in the second half. Ken Bush also played well in the cage for the Eagles, with 10 saves. Brian Regan tallied four goals and two assists for Cazenovia, while Brandon Moyer had a hat trick.

Jordan-Elbridge actually outplayed Cazenovia in most categories, earning the edge in ground balls (30-21) and shots (34-26). The Lakers edged them in face-offs by two. Junior Brian Belcher and sophomore Steve Major led in Eagles scoring, with two goals and an assist apiece. The team was able to spread the ball around, as James Hohm, R.J. Metz, Korey Smart and Joe Poppe each added a goal.

“The kids played really hard out there tonight,” Young said. “We've already made sectionals and have one game left, but this league is unbelievable. Every team will make sectionals and there are no undefeated teams, so it will be really interesting where everyone is seeded. Head to head matchups will decide a lot.”

In Division II, the Eagles are in last place, five league games behind first-place Skaneateles. Cazenovia is in second place, four games ahead of Marcellus, whom the Eagles have swept this season. Westhill rounds out the division, just a half game ahead of J-E, who they beat by just two goals earlier this season. The Eagles host Westhill on Wednesday for their final regular season game.

“Every team in this league shows up,” Young said. “It's frustrating but good to know that if you play well and stay focused, you've always got a chance to be in it and win the game.”
