Each Tuesday, The Citizen features a health professional from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks:
This week, we spotlight Dana Mandel of Mandel Therapy Group.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A. My practice provides physical, occupational and speech therapy services primarily to disabled children throughout Cayuga and Onondaga counties. Being able to provide a quality service to a typically underserved population in a rural county is most rewarding.
Q. What is the most challenging?
A. Finding coverage for the therapists out on maternity leave. Since Mandel Therapy Group opened in 1987, there have been nearly 40 babies born to the employees of the practice.
Q. Describe your ideal patient.
A. An infant with a severe physical disability. Children never complain during treatment, they only want to have fun.
Q. What is the best piece of advice you could give someone to stay healthy?
A. Exercise regularly, eat well, work on your relationships with other people, watch your posture, lift with your legs and find effective ways to deal with stress.
Q. What's the most common misconception you hear from patients?
A. That therapists can make their patients better. Therapists can instruct patients in activities and exercises to improve their health, but the patient must actually do the work.
Q. If you weren't in the health care field, what career or field would you do?
A. I think I would enjoy touring with the Rolling Stones.
Q. For someone considering a career like yours, what advice would you offer?
A. Stay focused, excel in school, perform volunteer or paid work in the health care field and work on your ability to communicate with people.
Q. What's your ideal cure for the common cold?
A. Chicken soup, and don't forget the parsnips.
Q. Despite being in the health care field, people would probably be surprised that when I'm off the job, I _________.
A. Perform in a Klezmer band.
